[chicago-aneinu] Please continue to daven for Eliyahu Rachamim ben Rochel.
Rabbi Yehuda Dunin made a trip to Spain to meet with Rabbi Eli Hecht, who has remained incarcerated in a Spanish jail since his arrest at the Madrid airport after he was found with 4 kilos of cocaine, having been duped into transporting a package without knowing of its true contents. Rabbi Dunin is one of the major activists working on securing Hecht’s freedom.
The visit comes after that of Rabbi Yosef Gafni and a number of visits paid by Madrid’s chief rabbi.
Upon his return to Israel, Rabbi Dunin relayed the horrifying conditions under which Hecht is being held, adding, “Eli needs many, many prayers and chapters of Tehilim (to be said in his behalf)…”
It has been 3 months since Rabbi Eli Hecht was imprisoned. His conditions are harsh and he is not surrounded by any Jews.
“Eli knows of the extensive activities being conducted for his release, and the Chabad community’s readiness to help simply warms his heart,” Dunin said, adding, “But his situation will require Tefilos…”
The community has been asked to pray and give charity in the merit of Eliyahu Rachamim ben Rachel.
Those wanting to help the release efforts can call Rabbi Dunin at +972 544263763.
Alone in his cell, with no co-religionists in his midst, Hecht’s mood is for the most part sad. Letters that were sent to him lifted his spirits in the darkness of jail.
Mail can be sent through zeev@crombie.com or forwarded directly to the prison:

COMING SOON Reb Moshe - Expanded Twenty-Fifth Yahrzeit Edition The life and ideals of HaGaon Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, The Wasserman Edition
ITS HARD TO BELIEVE REB MOSHE 25TH YAHRZEIT IS THIS YEAR. A generation ago, ArtScroll/Mesorah's Reb Moshe by Rabbi Shimon Finkelman, became an instant classic. It changed people's lives, literally. Now, in honor of the Rosh Yeshiva's 25th yahrzeit, Rabbi Finkelman has greatly expanded the original volume with scores of new anecdotes drawn from interviews with people whose lives were touched by the Rosh Yeshivah. It contains new documents and material culled from articles published over the last quarter of a century. Dozens of new photos, many of them never before published, enhance this magnificent volume. This is a new book in a very real sense. It shines an even sharper light on Reb Moshe's life, his awesome greatness in Torah and superlative character.

It has been said, “As goes Iowa, so goes the nation.” If so, it may be prudent to begin worrying about the direction of our country. Iowa is beginning to display some ominous signs of injustice and prosecutorial abuse, especially if you are trying to operate a business venture in there and are seen as an outsider.
Mrs. Wendy Weiner Runge (Ze’eva Rachel bas Chaya) is a Minnesota mom with strong links to her neighborhood community and four children in religious Jewish day schools. Blessed with uncommon talents, Wendy signed on to help produce a thoughtful film about modern spiritual values. Her job was to secure investor deposits and manage the production’s finances. Enjoying a pre-meltdown wave of local economic development initiatives, Wendy and her tiny production company received an invitation from the State of Iowa to make her movie in their state, in exchange for which the state would issue resalable state tax credits she could use to fund the production.

OU Melacha #4 – M’ameir (Gathering)
In the constructing the Mishkan, m’ameir (gathering) involved binding sheaves together; it is the fourth of the 11 agricultural melachos. For practical purposes, m’ameir involves any collecting of scattered produce. It doesn’t have to be fruit, though–anything that grows from the ground is subject to m’ameir. For example, the m’kosheish eitzim (gatherer of sticks) who desecrated Shabbos in parshas Shlach (Number 15:32) might have been guilty of m’ameir (although he might have been guilty of kotzeir for breaking the sticks off of trees – see Talmud Shabbos 96b).
According to most authorities, m’ameir only applies (a) to things that have not been previously gathered and (b) only in the place where the things grow and their gathering normally occurs. Therefore, if you knock the bowl of fruit off your host’s Shabbos table, it’s okay to pick up the fruit and put it back in the bowl. However, if produce scatters outside, one is rabbinically prohibited from gathering it as a weekday activity that is dangerously close to m’ameir (see Talmud Shabbos 143b).
Additionally, once produce has been processed, such as weaving wool into a garment or carving a stick into a wooden spoon, m’ameir no longer applies.
This is just an introduction to the concepts of the melacha of m'ameir; it is not a substitute for a full study of the halachos.
