BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA PARSHAS MASEI
This week's Parsha discusses the laws concerning murderers. The Torah states that we must not allow a murderer to get off free because doing so is considered to be "flattering the land". Rashi explains that flattering in this context means to bring "guilt" upon the land. It is quite puzzling that the Torah uses the word "flattering" in order to convey "guilt".
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein Zt"l explains this oddity with an insight on how the Torah understands murder and how the secular world understands it. He explains that the secular world understands murder as the destruction of human civilization. As such, they believe that there is room for discussion or negotiation as to what bears greater importance to human civilization. On the other hand, the Torah views murder as the destruction of a human being. It is for this reason that the Torah respects the life of even a single human being at great expense, even if the individual is elderly, and even a very short life span. Hence, one who violates murder or supports murderers according to the Torah's definition of the matter is giving undue respect to the civilization of the land, which is a form of flattery.
In this week's journal we will focus on the difference between the Torah's view on capital punishment versus the secular world's view.
CHASSIDIC PEARLS BY RABBI LAZER BRODY PARSHAS MASEI
(NOTE THIS DIVAR TORAH IS SET UP IN A DOUBLE PARSHA FORMAT PARSHAS MASEI IS ON THE BOTTOM)The Torah is neither a history book nor a biography of the Jewish people; the Torah is called "The Written Law" because it lists the six hundred thirteen commandments that govern how Jews must live their lives, as dictated from Hashem to Moses. One could therefore ask why the Torah lists every single journey. We know that the wisdom of the Torah is eternal; as such, what's the timeless message that we learn from the journeys of our forefathers in Sinai?
Rebbe Nachman of Breslov teaches (Likutei Moharan I:25) that the klipot – the husks of impurity that surround the holiness in each spiritual level – are "the fantasies, the musings, the lusts, the confusions, and the obstacles" of each spiritual level, which one can only overcome by pondering the magnificence of Hashem. "Know," says Rebbe Nachman, "that each and every world and each and every spiritual level has its own set of fantasies and so forth; when a person progresses from level to level, then he must necessarily traverse these fantasies [confusions, obstacles, etc. – LB] in order to reach the holiness, and as soon as he ascends to a new spiritual level, then the klipot in that level are aroused to surround him; one must then subdue them and shatter them, in order to purify the place [level – LB] from the klipot."

[chicago-aneinu] AND CCHF Community Safety Alert!
There have been various home thefts and scams in our neighborhoods in recent weeks, by perpetrators using different means to gain access into the home, and to personal information.
Therefore, please be advised, and share this information with your family and friends:
1. NEVER open the door to a repairman, delivery man or any service that you did not order, or have no knowledge of. There have been recent robberies that were perpetrated by people posing as servicemen.
2. BE WARY of people posing as new neighbors, who gain entry into the home, and then use the opportunity to steal. One such deception involved a white couple in their 20s, in a light colored mini-van.
3. Ringing your doorbell or knocking on your door could also be a method of burglars to ascertain if anyone is home. Incidents of teenagers knocking on doors to learn if people are home have been reported. Do NOT open the door, but make it clear someone is home.
4. There are people canvassing the neighborhood, promoting offers like buying the NY Times, at a discounted rate. Do NOT provide them any information, such as your signature, credit card, etc. This is an attempt to acquire your personal information for theft.
5. Please report any suspicious activity to the police immediately, by dialing 911.

Pollard in Bad Shape
Israel's Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, met Tuesday with Jonathan Pollard, who is serving a life sentence in prison for passing classified defense information to Israel. Pollard normally avoids discussing his health in meetings, but this time made clear to Oren how serious his medical situation has become, and the degree to which he is suffering.
Pollard's wife Esther was present as well, and told Oren, “I don't know how much longer he can hold on.” Pollard asked Oren to ask Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to push for his freedom.

CHASSIDIC PEARLS BY RABBI LAZER BRODY PARSHAS MATOS
(THIS SHOULD BE LEARNED L"N YEHUDA BEN NACHMAN)The concept of Torah study and immersion in a mikva as conducive to purification of the heart permeate the writings of the holy Baal Shem Tov and his disciples. His great grandson, Rebbe Nachman of Breslev, teaches that in "spirituality, when one's thoughts are focused on the magnitude of Hashem and on His holy Torah, and move from one thought to another, a spiritual heat is created by the friction of the thought movement that is passed down to the heart and sets the heart ablaze in yearning for Hashem. This is the principle heat of the element of fire (Likutei Moharan I:156)".
The above concept is the key to a superb spiritual ploy for teshuva and soul correction, which works much the same as libun, literally "whitening", or koshering a metal utensil by heating it until it becomes red-hot in a fire. Once the metal object or utensil is red-hot, all non-kosher substances that may have been absorbed in that utensil become null and void, and the utensil is rendered kosher.

[chicago-aneinu] YWN Kletzky Family Gets Up From Shiva Today; R’ Nachman & Esti Kletzky Establish ‘Leiby Kletzky Memorial Fund’
Today Wednesday is the last day of Shiva for the parents and five sisters of Leiby Kletzky a”h. It is difficult to fathom how they were able to survive the initial days of mind wrenching sleepless anxiety while the search was on to find their beloved only son. It is even more incomprehensible how they made it through the inconceivable and shattering shock of his death and the subsequent Levayah and burial. The seven days of Shiva typically serves as a cathartic period for the mourners to come to grips with the new reality that has been presented to them. The Kletzkys received an enormous amount of Chizuk and inspiration from the non stop stream of visitors who came to offer their condolences and to impart therapeutic words of healing. In particular, it was the families who themselves have experienced the loss of a loved one, who brought an immeasurable level of comfort.
It was clear to see that it was due to their rock solid faith in the One Above and their firm belief that every occurrence on earth, even the smallest detail, is unequivocally ordained by the Master of the World. Something as life altering, such as the death of a child of a child, was unquestionably the explicit will of Hashem, although His reasons and His ways are hidden.
During the entire week of shiva Reb Nachman Kletzky and his wife Esty did not stop offering words of gratitude to each and every member of the community for all their efforts throughout the entire ordeal and for the many individuals and organizations who took a personal leadership role.
Upon rising from Shiva this morning, Reb Nachman Kletzky very poignantly declared. “Had my dear son Leiby lived he would have contributed so much good to the world. He was such a sensitive and kind soul. Now that his beautiful life was cut so short we should not allow the world to miss out. Our family wishes to establish the LEIBY KLETZKY MEMORIAL FUND to perpetuate the memory of our dear Leiby and to keep him alive in our hearts and minds. This fund would help anguished families in crisis and need, something that Leiby would have wanted to do had he been given more years of life. By making this fund a successful one we can turn the anguished cries of “Leiby, Where are you?” into the sacred reply of “I am here, helping my fellow Jews”.
Anyone wishing to express their pain, grief, and heartfelt condolences to the Kletzky family can do so by channeling it into a vital benevolent cause: the LEIBY KLETZKY MEMORIAL FUND. The fund will be under the explicit management of Nachman & Esty Kletzky and their Rov Rabbi Binyomin Eisenberger shlita.

CHASSIDIC PEARLS BY RABBI LAZER BRODY PARSHAS PINCHAS
(THIS SHOULD BE LEARNED L"N YEHUDA LEIB BEN NACHMAN)
In the beginning of this week's portion the Torah relates Hashem's command to Moshe (Moses) to kill the Midianites, since they sent their women to entice Israel to debauchery. In light of Western concepts of justice, one may ask, why kill all the Midianites? Is that justice? Why not execute the guilty women only?

BORUCH DAYAN EMMES: Brutal Murder Of 9-Year-Old Leiby Kletzky A”H
5:20AM EST (Wednesday): With an indescribable amount of pain, and a heavy heart, YWN regrets to inform you of the brutal murder of 9-year-old Leiby Kletzky A”H. Although the details are still unfolding, Misaskim is working closely with the NYPD and NYC Medical Examiner to ensure that the proper Kavod is given to the Niftar, who was brutally murdered.
So many organizations and community activists worked together in harmony the past few days, including Hatzolah, Shomrim, Misaskim, Chaveirim, and others. Thousands upon thousands of volunteers gave of their time, and walked the streets in the sweltering heat for hours on end, to try and find Leiby A”H. The tremendous amount of unity among Yidden, and the massive Kiddush Hashem performed in the past few days should be a Zechus for the Niftar.
A public thanks must be given to the NYPD, who for the past two days worked tirelessly on the case. They brought in every resource that the department has available, and showed incredible personal involvement. Most notably was the constant presence of Brooklyn South Chief Joseph Fox, who was seen on the streets of Boro Park for the past 48 hours.
Early Wednesday, authorities arrested three people at the Kensington home at 466 East Second Street. FBI and police had to kick the door in. A gold car was found nearby, similar to one seen in a surveillance video police uncovered during their hunt for the boy.
A man who is seen walking near the boy in the video is one of those in custody, chief police spokesman Paul J. Browne said.
Police have not given a motive for the crime.
“There is no indication at this time that the victim was known to the suspect previously,” Browne said in a statement released Wednesday morning.
“Before establishing his identity, detectives had observed the suspect in a video recorded at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, where he was seen entering a dentist’s office on 18th Avenue in Brooklyn,” Browne said. “Detectives located one of the dentists, who worked there at his home in New Jersey late last night, and established that the suspect had been in the dentist’s office on Monday to pay a bill.”
Police said that, with the assistance of a receptionist and another dentist associated with the practice, detectives tracked down records, found the name and address of the suspect, then went to his home — where he was arrested.

JI JM365 – JULY: ALL STARS/ALL YEAR/ALL YOURS
There’s calendars for lovers of everything from Autos to Zebras…everything that is except Jewish Music. Think about it, why can’t Jewish Music fans have a calendar with 12 months of top stars to enjoy? Well as we couldn’t think of a reason either, we decided to do something about it. So please join us in welcoming (and enjoying) JM/365 the calendar created especially for lovers of Jewish music…and those who love seeing them smile. Its 12 months of everybody’s favorite stars just a click and download away–then ready for printing and displaying on your wall, desk or as a screen saver!
This month in honor of those long summer nights we present Yigal Calek. Did you know Yigal has done more for Jewish music then just bringing us the London School of Jewish Song? Below, in no particular order are Yigal Calek’s contributions to the wonderfully wild world of Jewish music. Here’s my top 12. Yes, I’m sure there’s more, but as I feel this is “geek like” enough, I’m not getting into a song by song analysis (for the most part anyway). If you don’t agree with any or feel I missed some please contact me c/o this website. Until then, here’s my
“CALEK’S TOP 12 CONTRIBUTIONS TO JEWISH MUSIC”
1) Giving It A Sense Of Style Not Just Song—The sketches, choreography etc, all proved that the boys were talented more than just vocally. Speaking of style, he also gave arrangers a chance to stretch their creative wings. Listen to ‘Nichsefa” on LMNY and you’ll hear Clave and other Latin percussion-esque sounds that were clearly part of the arrangement. Calek didn’t have a songwriting style as much as he gave songs he wrote a style.
2) Sensitivity— “Children of Silence” , “Pada”, “Shimu Melachim” and countless others all were “melodically nuanced”, many with 3 or 4 “parts” vs just the typically “high part” “low part” structure plus Calek’s “parts” were almost always pleasantly surprising rather than predictable.
3) The “Mashup Medley” : The group’s concert performances almost always featured a medley—that was actually more like a mashup—as in a group of songs (not always all Calek) that despite varying, tempos, styles and chords would—in Calek’s hands—become magically, memorably malleable…all while becoming even more musical—and kudos as always to Yisroel Lamm as his arrangements would invariably enhance Calek’s vision rather than merely accompany it
4) Choir As The Star—his songs (in the beginning at least) were almost always “sparsly” arranged with instrumentation than would ensure the vocals would never be over powered. This combined with his simple yet layered harmonies made for a listening experience that could be enjoyed on many levels
5) A Sound: “Legend” has it that Calek would only record in certain studios as this would give him the rich yet real choral sound he wanted. Listen to his earlier albums and hear for yourself, there’s a natural resonance and depth to the vocals that years later inspired certain choir leaders (and you know who you are) to seek out those facilities to record/mix certain parts of their projects…with varying results
6) A HASC High Point. When Sheya Mendlowitz announced that Calek was going to be a part of HASC –back when Sheya was still a part of it, initial reaction was raised eyebrows –until Calek together with a new choir took the stage and proved that lighting does in fact sometimes strike twice. Unfortunately a companion “London School” album which reflected a more contemporary musical sensibility didn’t fare as well which proves there is something to “sticking to the script”
7) Dedi: One of Calek’s side projects was the Pierchei Tzabarim a mid 70’s Israel-based choir that tried to recreate the magic of Jolly Old England is Jolly Older Jerusalem, the result which had Calek’s signature fit and finish didn’t resonate with listeners the way his other projects had, though the same couldn’t be said for one of the choir members, as it inspired a grateful Dedi…Graucher, who ultimately used it as a stepping stone to Graucher—uh greater, and louder things
8) Yossi Green; While Yossi Green gave us Yossi Green (feel free to ask him) and despite the fact their styles are to say the least different, (not to mention the fact that Yossi is a way more pertinent and prolific part of the JM world) Green (who met Calek when he was a budding composer/yeshiva student in London) considers these meetings amongst his first “breaks”.
9) The Jewish Concert As A Destination: Before Calek & The School non cantorial concerts were usually “a” thing to do vs “THE” thing to do. Calek and the choir changed all that—a lesson that even decades later wasn’t lost on Sheya Mendlowitz, Ding, Ohel and others.
10) Choirs Are Cool: Pre London Jewish boys choirs either backed up Chazzanim, and/or were used as affordable “home grown” entertainment for shul and yeshiva functions. Calek made it cool for kids to belong to a choir. In fact when Eli Teitelbaum decided to capitalize on “London Fever” by forming a choir (Kol Naim) for a Pesach concert/album. Hundreds of kids (and even more parents) from throughout the 5 boroughs (and parts of NJ) showed up at the Boro Park Y to audition in the hopes of being awarded a slot and really cool pull over sweater vest. That’s right hundreds of kids who were ready to give up the precious little free time they had all for two free tickets and a chance to say “I’m in the choir”. Kol Naim evolved into NY School which partially begat Amudai Shaish whilst in a related story a certain up and coming composer was discovering he could compose songs “the way other people breathe”
11) It’s Not Just About NY. Suddenly NY Jews were taken down a notch, sure we had the best pizza, Kosher King (a predecessor to Kosher Delight –so what if it was in the wilds of Coney Island?), the yeshivas that supplied camps with the coolest counselors, etc etc etc—in one fell swoop we lost our cachet as Jewish music’s entertainment incubator. Ok thanks to MBD, Fried and others we quickly recaptured it, but the fact that the #1 is Jewish music was an import not a domestic made us understand how GM felt when Toyotas started showing up on the road
12) Replacing The Iron Curtain With A Stage Curtain. One of the earliest by products of Glasnost JM-wise, was Calek and the Choir’s 1988 tour of the former Soviet Union. Yes they were preceded by (if memory serves) Shlomo, Sherwood and numerous Rabbanim, but the logistics of a Jewish Boys choir putting on a show stated with certainty that Glasnost was very real. Though one wonders how “Children of Silence” went over?
Be here next month as we take a look at one of artist that really left a “impression” on us.
