It was a typical park bench conversation. I hadn’t seen my friend for quite some time, and we both were delighted when we ran into each other by chance that afternoon. We shook hands, and withdrew to a bench in the shade to spend a few minutes together catching up with each other. As is often the case in such conversations, we found ourselves discussing mutual acquaintances with whom one or the other of us had lost touch. Pretty soon we were discussing Sam. The Ramban (Nachmanides, 1194-1270) understood this verse as the Biblical source for the mitzvah to settle and build up the Land of Israel: “You shall take possession of the Land and settle it; for I have given you the Land to possess it” (Num. 33:53) The following remarkable story was told by Mr. Yigal Gal-Ezer, who served as Israel’s vice state comptroller. In his younger days, Gal-Ezer would often visit Rav Kook’s home in order to be inspired by his holy presence.

With harsh words, the Torah admonishes a society where murderers can evade punishment through bribes: “Do not defile the land in which you live and in which I live.” (Num. 35:34) In what way does letting murderers go unpunished “defile the land”? And why does the Torah emphasize that this is the land where both we and God dwell? The Sages taught in Shabbat 33a: “For the crime of bloodshed, the Temple is destroyed and the Shekhinah [God’s Presence] departs from Israel. As it says, “Do not defile the land in which you live and in which I live.” If you do defile it, you will not dwell in it, nor will I dwell in it.” Why is it appropriate to punish such a dysfunctional society with destruction of the Beit HaMikdash, loss of the Shekhinah, and exile?

One who makes a vow should take care to fulfill it: “If a man makes a vow to God, or makes an oath to prohibit [something] to himself, he must not break his word. He should do all that he expressed verbally.” (Num. 30:3) Oaths and vows are a natural human response in times of intense emotions. Particularly when we sense danger or trouble, we spontaneously begin to bargain with God. We pledge to improve ourselves or repay some undeserved kindness. Why do people act this way?

Earlier this week, Matzav.com reported on the story of 7-year-old Miriam, who was found unconscious in a pool in Pomona, NY. We are B”H able to report that after round the clock tefillos and mitzvos done in Miriam’s zechus, doctors say her blood pressure other vitals have stabilized. Additionally, Miriam was seen tearing up, a sign that her body is hydrated. However, her condition still isn’t good and Miriam basShoshana still needs your tefillos and rachamei shamayim. A few months ago Miriam’s father, Shaya, began spearheading efforts to build a Mikva in his new community in Pomona.  This growing kehila currently has 150 families which presents an obvious need for this most important endeavor. Now during this eis tzara the family is trying to raise money so that the zechusim for the waters of this future Mikvah can stand as a merit for Miriam. Summary by Channie Koplowitz Stein This is the last devar torah for a few weeks. Thank you for reading. As Bnei Yisroel are about to enter the Promised Land, the time to apportion the land to the various tribes and families arrives. The land is to be “divided as an inheritance according to the names of their father’s tribes… according to the lot…” One family is concerned about this division. These are five sisters, daughter of a man named Tzelaphchad. They are his only children. Having no brothers, they protest to Moshe that the portion meant for their father will be lost to their family and tribe, since the lottery would include only the names of the men. Indeed, they have a valid point, and Hashem teaches Moshe the laws of inheritance that are then recorded in the Torah and become known as the laws of the Daughters of Tzelaphchad.

There is zealotry that stems from hatred and jealousy. Though the motives are evil, this type of person is always able to cloak himself in a mantle of piety and public service. Unfortunately, this type of zealotry abounds in our religious world. Innocent people are pilloried, their words are distorted and they are slandered falsely and shamelessly, all in the name of higher religious causes.

One of the great challenges in life is retaining belief and optimism regarding humans when one is, in one's heart of hearts, a confirmed skeptic. Knowing that he is about to die, Moses turns to God and asks him to appoint a successor: Moses said to the Lord, “May the Lord, God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” (Num. 27-15:17). It is a farsighted, selfless gesture. As Rashi comments: “This is to tell the praise of the righteous – that when they are about to leave this world, they put aside their personal needs and become preoccupied with the needs of the community.” Great leaders think about the long-term future. They are concerned with succession and continuity. So it was with Moses. God tells Moses to appoint Joshua, ‘a man in whom is the spirit’. He gives him precise instructions about how to arrange the succession: “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him. Have him stand before Elazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him… At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.” (Num. 27:18-21). There are three actions involved here: [1] Moses was to lay his hand on Joshua, [2] have him stand before Elazar the priest and the entire assembly, and [3] give him “some of your authority [me-hodecha]”. What is the significance of this threefold process? What does it tell us about the nature of leadership in Judaism?

The Torah uses a series of almost poetic metaphors to describe the daily Tamid offering: “Be careful to offer My offering — My bread-offering, My fire-offering, My appeasing fragrance — in its proper time.” (Num. 28:2) What is the significance of these four descriptions: offering, bread, fire, and fragrance?

RAV KOOK ON Pinchas Part 2: Zealotry for the Sake of Heaven

Pinchas’ Lineage When Pinchas saw a prince from the tribe of Shimon publicly cavorting with a Midianite princess, he took the law into his own hands. Using his spear, Pinchas killed them both. God praised his act of zealotry, rewarding him with the priesthood. “Pinchas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aaron the kohen, was the one who zealously took up My cause among the Israelites and turned My anger away from them.” (Num. 25:11) Why does the Torah need to point out Pinchas’ lineage here? This is particularly puzzling considering that the Torah just identified Pinchas a few verses earlier (25:7). The Midrash (Sanhedrin 82b) explains that the tribal leaders mocked Pinchas: ‘His maternal grandfather [Jethro] fattened up calves for idolatrous sacrifices — and he had the audacity to murder a prince of Israel!’ Therefore, the Torah publicized Pinchas’ lineage through his father’s side, Aaron the High Priest. This Midrash requires clarification. Why was it so important to respond to these disparaging comments? Furthermore, what does it help if one of Pinchas’ grandfathers was the high priest - his other grandfather was still a reformed idolater!

RAV KOOK ON Pinchas Part 1: Atonement for the New Moon

The Torah describes the offerings presented for each holiday, starting with those brought on Rosh Chodesh, the first day of the lunar month. “This is the burnt-offering of the new month, throughout the months of the year. And one male goat for a sin-offering to God.” (Num. 28: 14-15) There is a very peculiar Talmudic tradition about the purpose of the new moon sin-offering. For whom does this offering atone? The Talmud (Chulin 60b) explains that this is literally a ’sin offering for God.’ The offering comes to atone for God, as it were, for making the moon smaller than the sun. (According to the Midrash, the sun and the moon were initially created the same size. The moon complained, ‘Is it possible for two kings to rule with one crown?’ and was punished by being reduced in size.) For this reason, a sin- offering is presented with the appearance of the new moon. Is it possible to say that God sinned? That God needs atonement?
