OU TORAH Behar 5778 By Rav Moshe Twersky, HY"D

When it comes to the mitzvah of blowing shofar on Rosh Ha’Shana, the Rambam (Hilchos Shofar 1:1,3) explicitly says that the mitzvah is to hear the shofar blasts, as opposed to the act of blowing, and that is why, for example, one has fulfilled the mitzvah (b’dieved) if he heard the blasts of a stolen shofar. In his responsa, the Rambam underscores this point by elaborating that the relationship between the act of blowing the shofar versus hearing the shofar blasts is akin to the relationship between building a sukkah and sitting in the sukkah. This is all insofar as the mitzvah of shofar on Rosh Ha’Shana is concerned. When it comes to the mitzvah of blowing shofar on Yom Kippur of the Yovel year, though, the Rambam (Sefer Ha’Mitzvos, 137) says that the mitzvah is to blow the shofar. It is the act of blowing which is the mitzvah. It is quite possible, then, that if a stolen shofar was used for Yom Kippur of Yovel, the mitzvah has not been fulfilled (even b’dieved). Another possible ramification is relevant to how many people have to blow the shofar. On Rosh Ha’Shana, when the mitzvah is to hear the shofar blasts, it is sufficient to have one person blow and everyone else listen. But, on Yom Kippur of Yovel, when it is the act of blowing the shofar that is the mitzvah, it is wholly possible that every individual would have to blow for himself (since shomeiah k’oneh cannot apply to an action).

R' Moshe Sherer's Dream and Mission, Amazing Stories from the Siyum Hashas
Tribute to a Global Vision for the Siyum HaShas

With preparations for the upcoming Siyum HaShas on January 1, 2019 at MetLife Stadium well underway, we take a moment to mark the yahrtzeit today of Rabbi Moshe Sherer zt"l, legendary leader of Agudas Yisroel.

Rabbi Sherer was one of the visionaries who foresaw the growth of Daf Yomi and the Siyum HaShas, believing back in the 1980s that a larger venue would be needed for this once-in-seven-and-a-half-years event.

"More than a celebration," Rabbi Sherer proclaimed at the Siyum HaShas almost four decades ago, "it is a powerful demonstration of the nitzchiyus of Torah, of netzach Yisroel lo yeshaker."

The explosion of Daf Yomi is credit, in large part, to Rabbi Sherer, who saw the potential and growth of the program.

The following video provides a glimpse into that vision, tracing it from the Siyum HaShas in the Felt Forum to the present-day – The Siyum at MetLife Stadium.

Aneinu Please Daven

Chaya Rachel bas Miriam, a Chicagoan, has done wonderfully over the past couple of years with a serious life threatening illness.  Not that the illness will go away and she recover. She is undergoing such pain and discomfort from another condition that her body developed and has been in the hospital for a week.  All efforts to help her have been unsuccessful. She was just informed of some other hospitals that maybe her physicians will consult as to other strategies that may work. Please continue to daven for her as often as possible.
