Please have extra Kavanah (concentration) for the situation in Ukraine.
Friday, April 29 – כ"ח ניסן
Tehillim 64
The commentators understand that, in this psalm, David HaMelech is prophesizing about a future event in which Daniel is thrown into a pit of lions. Daniel was in danger, just as David was in danger in the Desert of Yehuda (perek 63). The advisors to King Darius convinced him to issue a decree to prohibit any prayer to G-D for the next 30 days in order to assert his power. All prayers should rather be prayed to Darius.
Daniel, of course, would not comply with such a decree. He must pray to Hashem and he must pray three times a day. Thus, he was thrown in to the lion's den, but merited a miraculous salvation.
In all such situations we put our trust in Hashem and we are confidently happy, for we know that Hashem guides us always to the best possible outcome.
Segula for this perek: To pass through a river. (From the Sefer Shimush Tehillim attributed to Rav Hai Gaon (969 -1038).)

2.  Hear, O God, my voice in my prayer; from fear of the enemy You shall guard my life.
3.  You shall hide me from the counsel of evildoers, from the gathering of workers of iniquity,

5.  To shoot at the innocent in secret places; they shoot at him suddenly and do not fear.
6.  They strengthen the evil word for themselves; they tell to hide snares. They say, "Who will see us?"
7.  They seek pretexts; they have completed a diligent search, hidden within man and in the depths of the heart.
8.  And God cast them down; their wounds were [like] a sudden arrow.
9.  That which they hoped would make him stumble, their tongue brought upon them; all who see them will shake their heads.
10.  Then all men feared, and they declared the work of God and understood His deed.
11.  The righteous will rejoice with God and take shelter in Him, and all upright of heart will boast.

I Kings - Chapter 1

David is Cold, Adoniyahu is Ambitious and Solomon is King

King David had grown old and was showing his age. They covered him with blankets, but he still didn't warm up, so they fetched a young maiden to serve the king and also to keep him warm with body heat. They found a beautiful girl named Avishag the Shunamit. She took good care of King David, but he did not have relations with her.

Adoniyahu, son of David and Chagit, decided that he was the logical successor. (He was the fourth-born son; his older brothers Amnon and Avshalom were dead and Kilav didn't want the job.) He took a page from big brother Avshalom's book and got chariots and runners to go before him. Unlike Avshalom, he did not intend to depose David, he just meant to position himself for when his father passed on. Yoav and Evyasar signed on to Adoniyahu's team and encouraged the people to support his cause. But Tzadok, Benayahu, Nathan the prophet and others did not support Adoniyahu. Adoniyahu made a feast and did not invite David's supporters or his half-brother, Solomon. At this point in most people's minds, it was all but a done deal that Adoniyahu was going to be king.

Nathan approached David's wife Batsheva, mother of Solomon. G-d had said that Solomon would be king after David and David had promised this. Batsheva was to go to David and inform him as to Adoniyahu's actions, then Nathan would enter and back her up.

Batsheva went to David and told him that Adoniyahu was calling himself the next king. While she was still speaking, Nathan entered and asked David if he ordered Adoniyahu to be the next king. After all, he was having a party with most of David's other sons and counselors, who were all screaming out, "Long live King Adoniyahu!"

That was enough for David. He commanded that Tzadok, Nathan and Benayahu take Solomon and anoint him king, then publicly proclaim it. Solomon was then to sit on David's throne, so everyone would know he was the designated successor. This they did, and the people went wild with celebration.

Yoav, who was with Adoniyahu, heard the tumult and asked what was going on. Along came Evyasar's son Jonathan, so Adoniyahu asked him. "Good news, right?" asked Adoniyahu. "Uh...not so much for you, Adoniyahu," replied Jonathan, "seeing as our master King David has named Solomon the next king." This news broke up Adoniyahu's party real fast. They all ran away.

Adoniyahu was afraid that Solomon would have him put to death as a rebel, so he ran and grabbed hold of the altar, which was a place of sanctuary for all but murderers. Solomon sent word that if Adoniyahu acted as a loyal subject, no harm would come to him. (Please note that word: If. That's a bigger word than it would appear, as we shall see.)

II Samuel - Chapter 24

An Important Real Estate Transaction

G-d got angry at the Jewish people (we're not told why) and He tempted David to sin. (Why did He tempt David to sin? Way back in I Samuel 26, David said to Saul, "If G-d put the idea in your head to persecute me..." Basically, G-d was saying, "Oh, I put such ideas in people's heads, do I? Fine, here's one for you.") David was tempted to conduct a census of the people. We know from Chumash that this is only permissible in a certain way and for a compelling need, not to count heads and not just because. Yoav tried to talk David out of it, but his mind was made up, so they took a census. They took nine months and twenty days to travel the whole country. They counted 800,000 men of military age in Israel and 500,000 in Judah. (These numbers differ from the parallel account in I Chronicles, which says 1,100,000 and 470,000, respectively. The reason for the discrepancy is that our account here does not include the Tribes of Levi and Benjamin among Israel, and Judah is rounded off.)

David realized that the census was a sin and he asked G-d to forgive him. G-d sent the prophet Gad to offer David a choice of punishments: seven years of famine, three months of occupying forces or three days of plague. David chose the plague, figuring it was better to let G-d strike the people than an enemy force. (Verse 24, "David said to Gad, I am greatly distressed..." is the opening line of the prayer Tachanun.) G-d sent the plague and 70,000 people died. G-d stayed His messenger of destruction when it reached Jerusalem, at the threshing floor of a Jebusite named Aravnah.

David inquired as to the merit of that place. The prophet Gad brought word to David that he was to build an altar there. Aravnah wanted to donate the threshing floor, the cattle and the tools, but David would not accept them as a gift; he insisted on paying. He paid fifty silver shekels for the property and the cattle. He offered his sacrifices and G-d answered his prayers; the plague stopped.

You're probably familiar with the location of Aravnah's threshing floor. Perhaps you've even been there. It was on a mountain called Moriah. Today we call it the Har HaBayis or Temple Mount. The threshing floor of Aravnah the Jebusite was the location where David's son Solomon would build the Temple.

BS"D

Dear Aneinu Members,

I hope that you all had a beautiful and uplifting Pesach! After preparing for weeks and weeks, in the blink of an eye, it is gone, but it's effects stay with us, buried deep in our neshamos. Although we may not realize it, we are not the same people we were before Pesach. We have all experienced Yetzias Mitzrayim, and we are now new beings imbued with more kedusha, and more emunah. Every night when we count the omer, we continue our spiritual climb, trying to rectify our middos to become better people, so that we will be ready to receive the Torah on Shavuos.

This is the life of a Jew. Hashem set up our calendar so that we can never become complacent. Our lives are filled with constant growth and spiritual striving. As soon as we finish yontiff there is always Shabbos, or Rosh Chodesh, or a fast day, or another yontiff. Hashem is constantly prodding us to keep going; to keep climbing another mountain. As long as we have the gift of life, we must continue to climb the ladder, the ladder that our father Yaakov dreamt of so many years ago. Sometimes we miss a rung and end up falling, but we don't allow that to get us down. We just continue climbing up again. One day, the time will come when we will all climb over the top, and we will all be awestruck at what we have accomplished. The geulah will arrive and the world will be filled with light, and beauty, and peace, and Hashem will smile at us and say, "I knew you could do it!"

Please remember to say your Tehillim this Shabbos! B"H the days are longer, but It is still perfectly fine to say your Tehillim on Friday night. You may check the Shabbos Tehillim spreadsheet if you are unsure which kappitlach you signed up for.
