Shana Tova

ROSH HASHONA MESSAGE

FROM ANEINU'S RAV: RAV HENOCH PLOTNIK SHLITA

There is a well known Medrash quoted by the Tur (forerunner of the Shulchan Aruch) that gives us some insight as to what our state of mind should be as we approach Rosh Hashanah. Despite the fact that we are going to judgement, we get dressed up in our finest clothing and eat a festive meal because "They know that Hashem will do a miracle for them."

Simply understood, the Medrash is telling us that we should approach the Yom Hadin with confidence that Hashem will accept our teshuva, which is nothing short of a miracle had we only realized what damage we do to our neshamos when defying the will of Hashem by sinning. Many commentaries attempt to explain how we can have such confidence, knowing full well that we have a lot to answer for and plenty of work ahead of us to fix what we have broken.

If we look however into another version of this same Medrash, as brought in the Yalkut Shimoni, we may have different understanding of Chazal's message, one than can give us a novel perspective as we enter the Day of Judgement. This other version states that our confidence is due to the fact that Hashem has already performed miracles for us in the past, thereby giving us hope as we beseech Him this year, as opposed to a blind trust that he will perform a miracle this coming year.

The message then is that we are approaching our dearest and most reliable "friend", someone who has gone out of his way for us again and again to upset the laws of nature for our good. We are not coming l'havdil to someone who is out to get us chas v'shalom, rather to our "dodi", as in "Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li". He is our best and closest ally. All we need to do is commit ourselves and pledge our allegiance to Him and His Torah, strengthening our bond with him, not just in our hearts but in genuine actions to match. Knowing that it is Hashem who is in charge of our fate, allows us to come to the Yom Tov of Rosh Hashanah knowing our great advocate and judge is Avinu Shebashomayim. It is because of this that we are infused with simcha and even a sense of confidence, despite the air of Yom Hadin hanging over our heads.

I was once asked what my favorite part of the davening was when I had the privilege of leading the mussaf tefila on Yamim Noraim. I responded it was the ultra freiliche spirit going into kedusha immediately after the intense emotional tefila of U'nesaneh Tokef where we declare in very graphic terms how our fate is in Hashem's hands, for life and death, affluence and poverty, and any other event that will come our way. We then pivot and declare our ultimate happiness and privilege to praise Hashem like the angels in Heaven as we sing "Ein Kitzva..." , our unwavering belief in the eternity of Hashem and our inability to praise Him sufficiently. This serves to reinforce our confidence and belief that the Ribono shel Olam who has taken care of us until now, will continue to do so, as long as we are His true servants and subjects. Yes, our fate is in His hands, but I can sing with joy that I am in His presence right now, along with our Heavenly advocates, to implore Him for a year of life, prosperity, and good tidings. There is cause for happiness and unrestrained joy.

It has been a very challenging year for all of Acheinu Kol Beis Yisrael. We must continue to reinforce our emunah and bitachon that the ultimate yeshua can take place at any minute,as our best and closest friend is pulling all the strings, waiting for our tefilos to reach the Kisei Hakavod and declare for all time that the moment of ge'ula has arrived.

May we all merit a shana tova u'mesuka of bracha and success for ourselves and all of Klal Yisrael.

Rabbi Plotnik

A Kisiva V'chasima Tova
May We All Be Zocha For The Coming of Moshiach
Speedily and In Our Days

What do we choose?

BS'D

Through the verses of Malchuyot of Mussaf we recognize that Hashem rules the world; His authority is absolute and unconditional. The blasting of the shofar comes to coronate the King and reminds us that Hashem is the Creator of the entire world. The Shofar sound awakens remembrance of  the physical beginning of Hashem's plan for the world.  Moreover, our memory of Matan Torah is revived; the spiritual purpose to this world. Lastly the shofar comes to complete the picture of existence by reviving our memory of the ultimate culmination of Jewish destiny; the coming of Mashiach, B'H, b'karov.

What does it mean to anoint Hashem as King over the world?  A king is chosen by the people out of their own free will.  Yet the nations of the world have not 'chosen' Hashem and do not view Him as the Ruler of the world.  Our prayer on Rosh Hashanah is that soon the entire world will joyfully accept Hashem's kingship and sovereignty.  It is written in sefer Devarim (26:17), "Et Hashem he'emarta hayom l'heeyot lecha l'Elokim …. Hashem has distinguished today to be for Him a treasured people… " The commentaries explain this verse to mean – the Jewish people select and recognize Hashem to be the supreme and only authority over the world; Ein Od Milvado!

Hashem is our King and no matter what we do Hashem's will will be carried out. Simply put, Hashem's master plan for existence will unfold; through Rachamim or Din.  The choice is ours. Positive mode, Rachamim, is displayed when the Jewish nation follows the Torah laws.  Negative mode, din, happens only if the Jewish nation rebels thus causing her enemies to rise against her. This causes us to do teshuva thus resulting in our enemies downfall and displays Hashem's everlasting sovereignty to shine forth through their defeat.

B'H Please Hashem may it be Your will that all the dinim and judgments be sweetened on high with revealed Rachamim and Your true compassionate hand be broadcast for all to see. May it be that this year will usher in the revelation of Your complete glory and Kingship for all the world to witness and experience. Wishing everyone a sweet, fruitful, abundantly blessed New Year!

" Loneliness = feeling disconnected.
Connection is the antidote.
Hence חורבן (destruction) must lead to חברות (friendship and togetherness).
"

Do I Need to Buy My Products From a Jew?

Case: I buy a lot of supplies for my business. I can buy from a local Jewish hardware store, or from one of the big box stores. The local store has average prices, and the big box stores are cheaper.

Question: Do I need to buy the products from the Jewish store?

Presented By Rav Eliezer Cohen

Answer: There is a pasuk that says, "Vechi simkiru mimkar l'amisecha oy kana miyad amisecha, al tinu ish es achiv" (When buying or selling to other Jews, don't overcharge your fellow Jew). Rashi brings a Medrash that asks, why does the Torah say it in this format, that if you are selling or buying from a Jew you shouldn't overcharge, instead of simply stating, "Don't overcharge your fellow Jew"? Rashi explains that the Torah is teaching us that we are supposed to buy and sell to Jews and give them preference in order to help support them. This holds true only if the price difference between the two is small.

Question: How much more should I pay to buy from a Jew?

Answer: The Minchas Yitzchok brings multiple opinions. One opinion says that one should pay up to 1/6 more to buy from a Jew. The Chafetz Chaim brings down the same thing as well. This would fit very well with the pasuk, as that pasuk is referring to ona'ah, which means charging a Jew more than 1/6 of the market value for a product.

Sometimes Jewish stores do not have easy return policies, and then one may be stuck with the item if it doesn't work for him. If that is the case, one has no obligation to buy from the Jewish store.

However, it is very important to try to buy from a Jewish store whenever possible, even if that may cause some slight inconveniences, such as spending a bit more or traveling a bit further.

Subject: [chicago-aneinu] Please daven for our soldiers in Lebanon
Israel just began their "Ground" Movement into Lebanon .

This is a very Dangerous & Turning Point in the War .

Escalation, as a result of this incursion, is highly likely .

Please take a moment & say this T'fillah for the Men & Women of Tzahal .

May Hashem Yisbarach protect & shield them from harm's way .

Prayer for Israeli Soldiers

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob -- may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Forces, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our God, from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May the Almighty cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighters from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under our soldiers' sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is the Lord your God, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

Now let us respond: Amen.
