The Ramban explains that it would be impossible for the Torah to specify how to deal with a fellow neighbor or friend in each and every situation that may arise. Rather, the Torah prohibits a few specific behaviors such as gossip and revenge, and then states a general rule of ve'asisa hayashar vehatov, you shall do that which is right and good. Our mission is not simply to comply with the rules of the Torah. We are expected to internalize the values reflected by mitzvos bein adam l'chaveiro, and extend them to our everyday lives. It is not enough o ensure that we do not openly violate the mitzvos; we must ensure that every action that we take measures up to the ideals of yashar v'tov.
