Subject: [chicago-aneinu] Update on Search for Killer

Chicago's 50th Ward Newsletter

Dear Neighbor,

Update on Search for Killer

Hundreds of neighborhood residents crowded the JCC gymnasium yesterday to hear the Chicago Police provide an update on the investigation into two murders in East Rogers Park this week. I will summarize what was discussed, but first I would like to thank all of the police representatives for taking the time to answer our community's questions and brief us on the search for the killer.

Thank you to all the residents who came out on such short notice, and a special thank you to the following individuals:

First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio
Glen Brooks, Director of Public Engagement for the Chicago Police Department
Commander Robert Cesario, Bureau of Detectives
Rabbi Moshe Wolf, Police Chaplains Ministry
Commander Roberto Nieves, 24th District Police
Sergeant Shawn Sisk, 24th District CAPS Office
Jay Tcath, Executive Vice President, Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago

During the update, First Deputy Supt. Riccio assured us that these cases are receiving the full attention of the Chicago Police Department. The area is being saturated with police officers, both uniformed and covert. Dozens of detectives are working on catching the offender, and the department has enlisted the help of the FBI and ATF – federal agencies with significant resources and technology that can substantially aid the investigation.

At the meeting, the police showed several videos of the suspect taken by surveillance cameras near the Sunday shooting. To view the videos, please click here.

The police also released the following image of the suspect, pulled from the surveillance videos. He is described as a black male, with a thin build and wearing dark clothing, including a mask that obscured his face below the eyes. He is believed to be between 5'10" and 6' in height. As you can see from the videos, he walks with a unique gait, with his feet pointed out.

If you have any information about the suspect or the murders, please call the Area North Bureau of Detectives at (312) 744-8200. Tips can also be submitted to TIPSOFT.COM. The police are thoroughly following up on all tips from the public.

To help encourage those with information to come forward, Jay Tcath, Executive Vice President of the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, announced yesterday that the Jewish Federation is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the solving of both murders.

The police are investigating these cases aggressively. Until the suspect is caught, the CAPS Office recommends that everyone takes basic safety precautions:
  • Call 911 to report any suspicious persons or activity
  • Walk in pairs
  • Do not talk to strangers or approach strange vehicles
  • Be aware of your surroundings and travel in well lit and populated areas
The 24th District CAPS Office has prepared additional safety recommendations. Please click here to view the flyers. I also have "We Call the Police" signs available in my office. Feel free to stop by and pick one up to post in your front window.

Our community is strong. We will not allow one lone man to ruin our quality of life. Stay safe, stay brave, and trust in the Chicago Police Department to catch this killer.
