Subject: [chicago-aneinu] Important Info about Covid-19

WE'VE DONE WELL. BUT THE COVID-19 VIRUS IS STILL IN OUR MIDST

Refuah 311 has been consistently monitoring cases of COVID-19 in our community and in the greater Chicagoland area. The state and city estimates are released daily, and are reporting increasing numbers of new cases. We have not yet reached our peak.

We firmly believe that our community's adherence to the guidelines have lessened the number of new cases.

However, the danger is still real and we must remain vigilant. Within our community, we can share the following important data:

  • There have been at least 10 new cases of COVID-19 in our community this week. At least five people are hospitalized in serious condition. Our COVID patients range in age from their 30's to their 70's.
  • Persons who tested positive to COVID-19 over six weeks ago, are still testing positive on follow-up swab testing.
  • We are certain that there are many more unconfirmed positives and asymptomatic carriers. Such persons are unaware that they may be carrying the virus and are contagious.
  • Several people who were confirmed with antibodies and desired to donate plasma were turned away as they were still positive for the virus.
  • The local hospitals nearby are operating at capacity. Patients are being transferred between hospitals to facilitate bed availability.

Refuah 311 strongly recommends that all members of the community continue to exercise full precautions. It is imperative that everyone always practice proper social distancing. Yes, these measures DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Our considered position remains steadfast, that participation in any gatherings, whether in public or private settings, is unethical and dangerous to the community. Additionally, with the weather beginning to improve, it is critical for adults and children to practice proper social distancing while outside.

We implore everyone to wear a mask whenever out of the house, and among other people who are not immediate family members.

Refuah 311 understands this is difficult for some, but we must stress the importance of fighting this deadly virus as best we can. If we begin to become lenient in this matter, the risk of more infection within our community is very real and frightening.

Thankfully, the Chicago Jewish community has survived COVID-19 better than many other Jewish communities – chiefly as a direct result of your adherence and patience.
We hope you do not stop now.

We are attaching a fascinating conversation between the OU and Dr. Anthony Fauci, NIH Director, where he mentions Chicago specifically as still being a hot zone.
As always please do not hesitate to contact The Chicago Center or the COVID hotline & website for ideas and resources available to you.

Wishing all Klal Yisrael a speedy Refuah Shleimah.
