Public Safety Update

June 1, 2020

Dear Neighbor,

Our city and nation are going through a scary and tumultuous time right now. While I respect the right of individuals to protest and I deeply share your concern for justice and equality, I join with my colleagues in asking for peaceful demonstrations. Our city is trying to recover from a horrible pandemic, and the last thing we all need right now is violence.

I have been in constant communication with our local police commanders during last night's demonstrations and throughout today. I have also driven around the Ward to survey the situation. While there was some small, localized vandalism, we did not experience the widespread violence and looting that has shaken much of the city.

The neighboring suburb of Evanston did experience looting at a Best Buy on Howard Street. This is too close to our neighborhood for comfort. The Chicago police are working closely with their suburban counterparts to make sure the situation is resolved safely.

Thank you to all of our hardworking police officers for ensuring our neighborhood remains safe! Law enforcement will be out in force again tonight to protect our community, and a curfew will be in place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Finally, there is a lot of misinformation being posted on social media. I would like to remind everyone to please report any credible information to the police department, and refrain from circulating unverified speculation. All these rumors serve to do is scare people, which benefits no one.

The best thing you can do to protect our community is to stay at home! Please turn on your porch lights, stay inside, and obey the curfew. If we all work together, we will get through these trying times safely.

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein
