October 2, 2020
Dear Neighbor,

Public Safety Alert

I am sad to report that there were two armed robberies in our neighborhood this morning, and in one of the incidents a victim was shot in the foot. He was transported to the hospital in good condition.

The robberies happened on the 6900 block of N. Washtenaw and the 7000 block of N. Rockwell. Both incidents happened within a few minutes of each other and are believed to have been carried out by the same crew of offenders. The police are actively investigating.

I am outraged by the brazenness of these crimes—in broad daylight in close proximity to a busy park. The 24th District has assured me that the police are increasing patrols and paying special attention to the area.

Public safety is my top priority. I take this incident very seriously and will continue to work with the police who serve our neighborhood to make sure the 50th Ward remains safe and secure.

Complete the Census Before It Is Too Late!

Due to a federal court injunction, we have a little more time to complete the census. However, the final deadline is still being hotly contested, so do not delay! Visit my2020census.gov and take the census now.

The 50th Ward census response rate is currently 66.7%. This is higher than the city average, but we can and must do better. There are still about 6,622 households in the 50th Ward which have not responded!

Information collected from the census is used to ensure equal political representation and fair allocation of government resources. This cycle, more than $800 billion in federal funding is at stake for everything from education and healthcare to infrastructure and social safety net programs.

For every additional person counted in Chicago, we stand to gain approximately $1,400 that could be used towards our parks, schools, and infrastructure. This could mean hundreds of millions of dollars that our city simply cannot afford to lose!

Complete the census now at my2020census.gov or visit chicago.gov/census to find out how the next 10 years depends on your next 10 minutes.

Flu Shot Clinics

Now that the summer is over, flu season is just around the corner. Public health officials are warning about the dangerous confluence of influenza and COVID-19 and the possibility of overtaxing our health care system. This year, it is particularly important to get your flu shot to keep you and your family protected.

Social distancing guidelines prevent me from holding the regular flu shot clinic at my office. Instead, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is hosting over 40 recurring flu clinics at large locations across the city, which have the proper capacity for safe events. The schedule is available online at chicago.gov/flu.

Even if you do not typically get the flu shot, please consider getting one this year. This is especially true for people who are at higher risk of being exposed to or developing serious complications from flu and COVID-19, as well as those who are caregivers of people who are at higher risk from these two diseases. More information can be found at chicago.gov/flu. If you have any questions, please contact your health care provider.

Easing Business Guidelines

The City of Chicago released new, less restrictive guidelines for certain businesses this week. The new rules take into account our city's progress in fighting COVID-19 as well as the need to accommodate indoor options as the weather gets colder.

Effective immediately, many businesses will have increased indoor maximum capacity; taverns and bars will be allowed to serve indoors with strict limitations in place; restaurants and bars can stay open for extended hours; fitness classes and after-school programming can have increased group size; and personal services that require the removal of face coverings (such as facials and shaves) will now be allowed. More details about all of the changes can be found at: chicago.gov/reopening.

The Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP) held a series of webinars this week to explain the new rules for business owners. If you were unable to log on, or you would like more information, you can view the videos at www.youtube.com/ChicagoBACP.

The new, looser restrictions are only possible as long as our local coronavirus numbers continue to trend in the right direction. If you want to continue taking these important steps towards normalcy and our old way of life, please remember to wear a mask and continue to practice proper social distancing.

Police Reform and Accountability

The City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department are committed to increased accountability and forging a new path forward for the future. To that end, the local police departments will be holding a series of community conversations to engage the public in creating a Strategic Plan for 2021. The meetings will be held over Zoom due to COVID-19 precautions.

24th District Police Community Conversation
Wednesday, October 7: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Register at www.eventbrite.com/e/120577950897

17th District Police Community Conversation
Wednesday, October 14: 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Register at www.eventbrite.com/e/120582255773

The police department has also launched a series of policy surveys and will put together community focus groups to engage the public in helping set the course for the department. You can find out more information about both options at chi.gov/policereform

Members of the public have until Thursday, October 15 to complete online surveys on the following policy topics: The police are also conducting a series of discussions with community members. If you would like to attend one of the focus groups, please complete the interest form at www.research.net/r/CPDFocusGroups. Participants will be selected at random.

Our nation is at a crossroads. Do not pass up this opportunity to advocate for change. Take the surveys now, virtually attend your local community conversation, and sign up for one of the focus groups. Make your voice heard.

Halloween Safety Guidelines

Mayor Lori Lightfoot and CDPH Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady joined together this week to issue guidelines on how our city can have a safe and happy Halloween. The focus is on masks (not just for trick-or-treaters!), avoiding congregating, practicing social distancing, and absolutely no house parties.

The current guidelines can be found at www.chicagohalloweek.org. A full safety toolkit and list of Chicago Halloween activities will be available in the coming weeks. If we all work together and follow the rules, everyone can have a happy and safe holiday!

Chag Sameach!

The Jewish holiday of Sukkot begins tonight. I would like to wish the 50th Ward's Jewish community a happy, safe, and hopefully dry Sukkot.

Have a wonderful weekend. Stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein
Alderman, 50th Ward

Election Update

Vote By Mail
The Chicago Board of Elections has begun sending out Vote By Mail ballots to those who already applied. You can check the status of your Vote By Mail application here. If you have not yet applied, you can do so now at www.chicagoelections.gov/en/vote-by-mail-application.html.

If you choose to vote by mail, please return your completed ballot as soon as possible to ensure it arrives in time to be counted. Please also make sure to follow all of the instructions on the ballot to avoid any potential disqualifications.

Drop Boxes
The Board of Elections will also be installing Secured Drop Boxes throughout the city to offer an additional option to return Vote By Mail ballots. The drop boxes will be at every Early Voting site—including Warren Park in the 50th Ward at 6601 N. Western—from October 14 through November 3 during Early Voting hours.

There is also a 24-hour drop box already available at 69 W. Washington Street until 7 p.m. on Election Day (November 3). Another drop box is available at the Loop Super Site at Clark and Lake, 191 N. Clark Street, during Early Voting hours.

For more information, including a complete list of locations and hours of availability, visit www.chicagoelections.gov/en/drop-boxes.html.

New this year, voters can vote at any Early Voting site on Election Day instead of solely at their designated polling place.

The hours for Early Voting are as follows:

Saturday-Sunday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Election Day (November 3): 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Voting on Election Day
Many polling places have changed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The current list is available here (on Page 50). PLEASE NOTE: The list is subject to change due to the evolving COVID situation. As always, neighborhood polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Please take a moment to confirm your voter registration status at www.chicagoelections.gov/en/your-voter-information.html. If you are not registered to vote, you can do so online at ova.elections.il.gov. For more information or a mail-in registration form, click here.

50th Ward Donation Drive

We are collecting donations of food, clothing, and household essentials at the 50th Ward Office. Many of our neighbors are still grappling with the economic ramifications of COVID-19, and any goods you can spare will make a tremendous difference to those in need.

Drop off donations at 2949 W. Devon during regular business hours. Call before coming to make sure a staff member is available to pick up the donation outside the office. Staff will wear masks and gloves and follow social distancing procedures.

Please consider donating non-perishable food, clothing, and any other goods you can spare—every item helps!

Election Judges Needed

The Chicago Board of Elections is working hard to ensure a safe and fair election this November, despite the pandemic. You can do your part by signing up to be an Election Judge and earn $170 for the day (more if you complete an online training course).

If you are interested in serving, you can apply online at chipollworker.com. Paper applications are also available in the 50th Ward Office. Call (773) 262-1050 or email info@50thwardchicago.com to request one.

Election judges manage precinct polling places on Election Day and make sure everyone is able to exercise their democratic rights. You can learn more about the opportunity at chicagoelections.gov/en/serving-as-a-judge-of-election.html.
