The Correspondence of the Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi

Dear Kehot Friend,

Coming up, this week, on the Jewish calendar, is the 24th of Tevet. This date marks the anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, in the winter of 1812.

Themes include Rabbi Schneur Zalman's activism on behalf of early Chasidic settlers in the Holy Land; his activism to improve the conditions of the Jewish population in the the Russian Empire; tracts on the importance of prayer; an articulation of the foundations of the Chabad Chasidic movement, and relations between the nascent Chasidic movement and the Lithuanian rabbinic establishment. The letters fill some 600 pages and span the years 1781-1812.

"One who contributes from his wealth for the purpose of writing or publishing a book of a tzaddik --

At any given time, and in any corner of the world, that a person studies from this book, the tzaddik on high evokes merit on behalf of the donor through whom the book was disseminated."
