Strengthening Torah Life. Advocating for the Community. Serving Each Individual.
February 24, 2021 - 12 Adar 5781
News from the Agudah:

  • As part of a series of virtual town halls with elected officials and candidates, the Agudah Voting Project welcomed NYC mayoral candidate Maya Wiley. See below for more.

  • Camp Agudah news: This is a special week for Camp Agudah – the new gym, manufactured in Ohio, is being loaded onto trucks and will be delivered to the campgrounds this week. And campers already know that because of the circumstances we couldn't have a reunion this year. But, on Sunday, we're going to have "drive-by" reunions in Brooklyn, Monsey, Lakewood, and Far Rockaway. Enjoy!

  • See below for an important message from Chayim Aruchim to family members regarding hospice.

  • Between now and Purim, we will be having special shiurim in honor of Purim - please see below for this weeks full schedule, and we hope you'll join! Shiurim will be archived at https://agudah.org/torah-projects/ if you missed them when they played live.
The Agudah Voting Project: Town Hall with NYC Mayoral Candidate Maya Wiley
"Who the next mayor is and what they believe in, is very important to our community. It is important to us that our community votes in an informed fashion and knows where the candidates stand on different issues," explained Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Executive Vice President of Agudath Israel of America, in his introductory remarks at a virtual town hall hosted by the Agudah Voting Project with New York City Mayoral Candidate Maya Wiley, on Tuesday, February 23.

Ms. Wiley opened by speaking about her platform and love for New York City and its diversity and then took questions about how she would deal with issues facing New York City, such as the economy, COVID vaccine rollout, religious liberties, criminal justice and policing, yeshiva education, and anti-Semitism. Ms. Wiley said that having the government working together with the community it governs, is an area that is of great importance to her. Rabbi Yeruchim Silber, Director of New York Government Relations of Agudath Israel of America, concluded by thanking Ms. Wiley for sharing her vision for the city as she embarks on her campaign for the mayoralty.

This town hall was part of a series of town halls with prominent elected officials and candidates for office hosted by the Agudah Voting Project to educate voters, in its efforts to increase voter registration and turnout.
Important message from Chayim Aruchim to family members regarding Hospice

Consultation with a knowledgeable Rav is necessary before a decision is made to admit the patient to hospice care. Once the decision is made that admitting the patient to hospice care is appropriate, you need to be mindful that while hospice care can offer certain benefits, it can also present its own set of Halachic challenges.

  • Pain medications - Pain medication will likely be offered/prescribed to relieve a patient's pain symptoms. Relieving pain is very important. It is important to note, however, that certain pain medications could cause respiratory suppression and expedite death, which is against halacha. The Rabbonim of Chayim Aruchim can assist you in your discussions with the physician about pain medications and making sure the patient receives appropriate care.

  • Nutrition, Hydration and Medication - According to Halacha, nutrition and hydration (food and drink) must be provided to a patient in almost all cases. When having a discussion about hydration and nutrition, make sure to ask a knowledgeable Rov before making any decisions. In reference to medication, any symptoms that might indicate infection or other illnesses should be treated . The Rabbonim of Chayim Aruchim can be particularly helpful in discussing the pertinent medical issues with your physician and medical staff, and can then guide you to make the most appropriate decisions according to Halacha.

  • DNR and DNI orders - When offered Do No Resuscitate (DNR) or Do Not Intubate (DNI) advanced care directives at ANY medical facility, do NOT sign them UNLESS you first discuss the situation with a knowledgeable Rabbi. Only a Halachic Medical Directive should be signed.

  • CHAYIM ARUCHIM - DO call Chayim Aruchim, ANY time you need us! We are here for you. There is simply too much at stake to "go it alone"! Chayim Aruchim has trained Rabbis in the field of Medical Halacha to discuss with, and advise, you and your physician.
