News from the Agudah:

  • As the Russian invasion continues and intensifies, we do not know how long this war will last and where it will go, Hashem yerachem

  • Here is what we do know: the money collected is being sent and used to save neshamos almost as fast as it is coming in.

  • The need for funds to help people escape the Ukrainian war zone, and for food, lodging, and other necessities for refugees is mounting.

  • We are doing whatever is necessary, including privately airlifting food and medical supplies over enemy lines to those in immediate need, and opening warehouses in Poland.

  • We have thus raised our own goal, and will continue to do whatever we can to help our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. We hope you will do the same.

On Friday, March 11, high ranking Agudath Israel of America officials, along with representatives of other American Jewish organizations providing humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian refugees crossing the border into neighboring countries, participated in a meeting with UN ambassadors from a number of Eastern European countries. The meeting was hosted by the Slovakian Ambassador to the United Nations Michal Mlynar, and included ambassadors from Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Hungary, and Romania.

The meeting was intended to create a dialogue between the organizations, Ukraine, and its bordering countries about how best to coordinate efforts and assist each other. One of the main issues discussed was expediting the transport of food, religious articles, and other supplies, avoiding unnecessary delays as the materials proceed through customs. In addition, Agudath Israel board chairman Mr. Sol Werdiger raised the issue of providing Kosher food for Jewish refugees through the UN world food program.

"It was very helpful to speak with ambassadors of the countries bordering Ukraine. Many refugees are heading there either as a waypoint or, possibly, permanently," said Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, who participated in the meeting in his capacity as Executive Vice President of Agudath Israel. "We are particularly grateful to have heard directly from the Ukranian ambassador about the needs of his country and people."

Mr. Werdiger expressed his gratitude to the Slovakian ambassador for setting up this important meeting and recognizing the work of Agudath Israel. "But what is most important," said Mr. Werdiger, "are the channels set up by this meeting that will help strengthen the relief and rescue efforts."

The Power of an Hour in Highland Park, NJ
What can you accomplish in an hour? This past Wednesday night, over 100 Bnos leaders and advisors got together for an inter-city leadership appreciation event, combining inspiration and fun. There was plenty of networking, plus a game, activity, and speaker.

Apropos for the crowd, the theme was "Yesh koneh olamo b'sha'ah achas." Never underestimate the power of an hour. Bnos groups may seem like a tiny slice of time, but they have a ripple effect throughout the week.

Michal G., an advisor from the Lower East Side, explains the chizuk she gained from the event. "I grew up going to Bnos, and I was a leader in high school. Now I'm an advisor, but it's all been within my community. I never realized how many other people do what I do! It was so inspiring to see a room full of girls and women who are also giving up their Shabbos afternoons for the klal."

But the message went even deeper. "We heard a lot of tips and role-played situations that come up during Bnos Shabbos groups. I saw that everyone experiences the same issues. We're not in this alone."

That's exactly the point, says Mrs. Chana Baila Hass, national director of Bnos Agudas Yisroel. "We want to empower our leaders and advisors with the knowledge that they're part of a national team. We have so many resources to support them, and we're developing even more."

For example, Mrs. Hass mentions the Purim compilation her team put together this year. It has Purim ideas from Bnos branches around the country. "Cities can learn from each other without having to reinvent the wheel," she explains. "And watch out for a new leaders' initiative coming after Purim!"

"Bnos leaders make an impact that goes far beyond Shabbos. Our volunteers should feel the chashivus of being a Bnos leader," she concluded.
