Dear Neighbor,

50th Ward Movie in the Park

The 50th Ward Movie in the Park was a tremendous success this week! We were joined by hundreds of local families for free pizza, ice cream, snacks, airbrushing, balloon twisters, magic, and the movie Encanto.
View all of the photos on Facebook here.

Thank you to everyone who came out! Thank you to all of the volunteers. And thank you to our generous sponsors: Senator Ram Villivalam, Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, MWRD Commissioner Josina Morita, Dunkin' Donuts (3132 W Devon), 7-Eleven (6801 N Western), Tel Aviv Pizza (6349 N California), Jewel-Osco (2485 Howard), House Mortgage (6212 N Lincoln), and Sovereignty Investments.

I cannot wait to see you all again at next year's Movie in the Park!

Outdoor Office Hours at Peterson & Drake

I am bringing the 50th Ward Office to you this summer! Meet me in the Ward this Monday (August 15) from 4-6 p.m. at the corner of Peterson & Drake. My staff and I will be ready to help you with any of your city service needs.

Serving the community is my primary goal as Alderman. I know that people sometimes have trouble making it to my office for help, so I am bringing the Ward Office to you. Please see below for all the dates and locations:

I chose locations in every section of the neighborhood so I can meet as many of you as possible. I hope to see you out in the Ward!

50th Ward Community Youth Council

Calling all local high school students! Join the 50th Ward Youth Council to make your voice heard in your community and gain valuable experience in civic engagement.
CONNECT NOW
As a member of the Youth Council, you will be directly involved in providing input and ideas for local improvements and promoting ease of access to City services for your neighbors. You will also connect with volunteer opportunities from community organizations, meet your elected officials, learn first hand about the diverse cultures that represent the 50th Ward, and make a difference in your community.

We invite interested high school students to fill out the form to join and connect with our office: bit.ly/50thWardYouth.

Property Tax Appeal Workshop

Rogers Park Township is now open for property tax appeals through the Cook County Assessor's Office. Join me for a special virtual tax appeal workshop—held together with the office of Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi—to learn how you can appeal your valuation and potentially lower your taxes!

The 50th Ward Property Tax Appeal Workshop will be held on Zoom on Tuesday, August 16 at 6 p.m. Register at bit.ly/ccaoappeal816.

The assessment of your home is one of the most important factors in determining how much you will pay in property taxes. Join us to learn how to appeal your assessment and make sure you pay only your fair share of the property tax burden.

Rogers Park Township encompasses the area of the 50th Ward that is north of Devon. The appeals period is open until Monday, August 22. You can file an appeal online at www.cookcountyassessor.com/online-appeals.

If your appeal is accepted, changes to your property's assessed value will be reflected in the second installment property tax bill you receive next year in 2023.

2023 Budget Forecast

Mayor Lori Lightfoot released the city's budget forecast this week, which projects a $127.9 million gap for fiscal year 2023. Please remember, this is just a projection. My colleagues and I in the City Council will now work with the Mayor and City departments to build and refine the actual budget for 2023.

As always, I want to hear your opinion as we begin this process. Please contact me with any feedback or comments you may have on the City budget. You can always reach my office at (773) 262-1050 or info@50thwardchicago.com. I want to hear from you!

Community Development Grant Deadline

The final deadline to apply for a Community Development Grant this year is coming up. Small grants up to $250,000 and large grants up to $5 million are now available to support local commercial development. Community developers, business owners and entrepreneurs, and property owners are welcome to apply.

The application deadline is Friday, August 19 at 11:59 p.m. Apply online at www.chicago.gov/ChiRecoveryGrant.

The Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) held an informational webinar to explain the program. Watch a recording of the webinar, download the presentation, or read answers to frequently asked questions.

The Community Development Grant is part of the Chicago Recovery Plan, a strategy to utilize federal funding to catalyze sustainable economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Learn more about the plan here. For any additional questions, please email dpd@cityofchicago.org.

Community-Police Engagement

I joined the 24th District Police for several important community meetings this week. Thank you to Commander Joseph Brennan and all of the dedicated local police officers who serve our community so faithfully!

On Wednesday, I joined many of my neighbors for "Coffee With the Commander" at Bond Coffee Collective. It is vital for us all to have positive interactions with police officers in non-emergency situations. This event was a wonderful example of how we can develop a strong working relationship with the local police.

On Thursday, I met with Devon Avenue business owners and the 24th District Police to discuss safety in the commercial corridor. Our small businesses are the heart of the neighborhood's economy, and we need to make sure they are taken care of. I was very pleased to help facilitate this important meeting.

Have a wonderful weekend. Stay safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

Debra L. Silverstein

Clear Path Relief

The City of Chicago has started a debt relief pilot program. The Clear Path Relief (CPR) program is designed to help low-income motorists eliminate old debt by requiring payment of only the original fine amount on tickets issued within the last three years. Additionally, any new tickets will have 50% of the amount due waived if paid in a timely manner and will not incur any fees or penalties until after December 31, 2023.

Motorists are eligible for relief if they have a household income less than or equal to 300% of the 2022 Federal Poverty Guidelines or are currently enrolled in Utility Billing Relief. Additional details on the benefits, eligibility, and application for CPR can be found here.

City of Stories at the Chicago Public Library

Summer is almost over at the library! You are invited to participate in fun programs to celebrate the stories in your community, your culture and yourself. "City of Stories" will offer events and opportunities for children, teens and adults. Challenge yourself to read and learn this summer, or just track what you already do.

City of Stories runs until August 14. You can get started at any time: Visit chipublib.org/summer for events and reading recommendations for all ages this summer. Tag #SummerAtCPL on social media to share your progress and adventures as you celebrate City of Stories at the library.

Apply for a Free Gas or Transit Card

Residents in need can now apply for a free gas or transit card through the Chicago Moves program. The City will issue up to 50,000 prepaid gas cards of $150 and 100,000 prepaid transit cards of $50 to eligible residents. Apply now at chicago.gov/ChicagoMoves or fill out a paper application at any Chicago Public Library.

Recipients of the gas and transit cards will be selected by lottery. 75% of the cards will prioritize residents in community areas that face higher mobility hardship, including the 50th Ward. The remaining 25% of the cards will be distributed citywide in equal amounts to each ward.

The lottery will be conducted in the second week of May – September. To be considered for each month's lottery, applications must be submitted by the first day of that month. If you are not selected in one month's drawing, you are automatically entered into the next. Only one application will be accepted.

For more information or to apply, visit chicago.gov/ChicagoMoves.
