Agudath Israel Meets with New York Attorney General Letitia James to Address Concerns of the Jewish Community

Agudath Israel of America held a productive meeting with New York Attorney General Letitia James to address pressing concerns on important issues affecting the Orthodox Jewish community in New York.

Agudath Israel has had a longstanding relationship with the Attorney General, working together with her for the past 20 years - first as a NYC Councilmember representing a district that includes Crown Heights, then as Public Advocate, and now as Attorney General.

The discussion focused on religious discrimination in zoning matters and the rise in hate crimes targeting those who are visibly Jewish.

Agudath Israel of Illinois applauds the past and present mayoral administrations for working on and launching a new $5 million cash assistance program for children with disabilities. Through this program, the city will distribute $500 to eligible low- and middle-income students with disabilities. This program is the result of a year-long joint initiative of AIOI and the mayor's office. The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) has released the RFP for organizations interested in administering the program.

"While the program's design is slightly different from the one we initially envisioned, we are thankful to the city for appreciating the importance of supporting students who struggle the most," said Rabbi Shlomo Soroka, AIOI's director of government affairs. "We look forward to assisting our community's most vulnerable students in receiving these grants and partnering with the mayor's office on future projects to benefit all city residents."

Agudath Israel of America continues to make strides in enhancing fire and safety protocols in New York City yeshivas.

Since its inception, the partnership between the Agudah and the FDNY has yielded significant results. The D-20 Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor Certificate, specifically designed for nonpublic school principals and supervisors, has become an essential component of ensuring the safety of students. Recently, the Agudah held its fourth D-20 training event, with the participation of over 50 principals and school leaders. This ongoing initiative emphasizes Agudath Israel's commitment to upholding rigorous fire and safety protocols within yeshivos and providing tailored safety measures.

YahalomNJ Hosts Mothers' Night Out for Mothers of Children with Special Needs

With an unprecedented turnout, Yahalom's recent event was standing room only. Last Wednesday, YahalomNJ hosted a Mothers' Night Out for mothers of children with special needs.

About two years ago, Agudas Israel's New Jersey office started Yahalom as a resource center for families with children with special needs. Yahalom offers guidance and direction with organizations, support groups, peer support, government funding, meals, etc. Following its success in Lakewood, divisions opened in New York and Chicago, with another branch in Florida on the way.

One goal of Yahalom is to host events for parents, providing them with a venue to encourage each other and rejuvenate. Parents with special needs children need to be cared for too. Mothers' Night Outs, and more recently Fathers' Night Outs, have been Yahalom's way to address this effectively. In line with this was last Wednesday's Mothers' Night Out.

Yahalom Chicago Parent to Parent Support

Yahalom Chicago hosted a support group for mothers of children with mild developmental disabilities at the home of Blimi Jeremias. The evening consisted of mothers who have older children with mild disabilities who, through sharing their knowledge, were able to guide a group of mothers with younger children on various topics of interest.

Bnos Agudath Israel of Chicago is proud to announce that over 70 girls from the 7th & 8th grades recently attended a comprehensive First Aid presentation. The two classes were given by a Hatzalah female instructor (to enable hands-on demonstrations) on Wednesday, May 31, at the Hatzalah Chicago headquarters in Lincolnwood.

Aside from being shown how to respond to many common place injuries the girls were also shown how to perform potentially life-saving measures such as the Heimlich Maneuver and basic CPR. Before leaving, the girls were given a tour of the inside of a Hatzalah ambulance, along with explanations of the purpose of all the emergency medical equipment inside.

Speaking on behalf of all the girls who attended, Mrs. Suri Aron, Bnos Director, summed up the evening: "The classes were very informative, the instructor was excellent and all the girls left with the knowledge necessary to provide medical intervention if chas v'shalom needed."

Agudath Israel Meets with New York Attorney General Letitia James to Address Concerns of the Jewish Community; continued...

The Agudath Israel delegation, led by Rabbi Yeruchim Silber, director of New York government relations for Agudath Israel, raised concerns about discriminatory practices that have impacted the establishment and expansion of religious institutions, particularly shuls and yeshivas, and thanked Attorney General James for her work in combatting such practices.

Addressing the rising trend of antisemitic hate crimes targeting Orthodox Jews in New York, the Attorney General expressed her deep concern and reaffirmed her commitment to protecting the Orthodox Jewish community.

Another critical topic discussed was the ongoing challenge of the prevalence of anti-orthodox sentiments in the media. Agudath Israel presented its KnowUs initiative, aimed at combating misconceptions and biases against the Orthodox Jewish community. The Attorney General expressed her support, emphasizing the need to foster mutual respect and understanding among different religious groups.

During the meeting, Attorney General James expressed her deep concern regarding the recent commencement address given by a graduate of the City University of New York (CUNY) law school. The Attorney General emphasized her commitment to combatting antisemitism in all forms and her determination to ensure that institutions of higher education remain safe and inclusive for Jewish students.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said, "In the face of rising antisemitism, civic leaders have a responsibility to step up, speak out, and stand united with members of the greater Jewish Community. Agudath Israel has been a leader for New York's Orthodox Jewish Community, and has provided essential services and support to thousands of families. I am proud to work with Agudath Israel on the pressing issues impacting our communities, and my office will continue to investigate hate crimes and combat discrimination. I will never allow intolerance, antisemitism, and ignorance to go unchallenged in this state."

YahalomNJ Hosts Mothers' Night Out for Mothers of Children with Special Needs; continued...

Amidst the fine décor and comfortable atmosphere, mothers were treated to an extravagant milchig buffet, an exciting raffle, and a special program. Chayala Neuhaus, renowned composer and singer, performed not only for, but also with the mothers who came. Song books were given out to enable everyone to sing along with Mrs. Neuhaus. Ultimately, it was a personal and uplifting experience for everyone. The event left everyone refreshed and on an emotional high. Still, to keep the good feelings going long afterwards, Yahalom handed out flash drives containing Chayala's songs.

For parents of children with special needs, sending a child away to sleep away camp for the first time can be challenging. Seeing the need to address the issue, Yahalom United, the joint effort of the multiple Yahalom divisions, put together a guide containing tips from parents who already met this challenge.

"I am really appreciative of the work done by YahalomNJ," said one mother. "The event left me feeling calm and relaxed. The resource guide for camp was also very informative."

Mrs. Chana Laniado, the director of Yahalom, Lakewood, summed up the evening: "It gave chizuk, hope, inspiration, and joy to everyone who came. People in the room felt connected. It was really special."

Agudath Israel thanks Towne Nursing for their generous sponsorship of this essential event.
