New Cash Assistance Program for Children with Disabilities

Agudath Israel of Illinois applauds the past and present mayoral administrations for working on and launching a new $5 million cash assistance program for children with disabilities. Through this program, the city will distribute $500 to eligible low- and middle-income students with disabilities. This program is the result of a year-long joint initiative of AIOI and the mayor's office. The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) has released the RFP for organizations interested in administering the program.

"While the program's design is slightly different from the one we initially envisioned, we are thankful to the city for appreciating the importance of supporting students who struggle the most," said Rabbi Shlomo Soroka, AIOI's director of government affairs. "We look forward to assisting our community's most vulnerable students in receiving these grants and partnering with the mayor's office on future projects to benefit all city residents."

Message from the Office of Jan Schakowsky

As the summer travel season approaches, be sure to check your passport BEFORE you book travel! Current processing times for passports are 10-13 weeks for routine and 7-9 weeks for expedited. These times are subject to change and are posted on the Dept. of State Website. If someone in your family is planning to go to Eretz Yisroel or out of the country for Elul zman, yom tov or end-of-summer travel and needs a new passport, please make an appointment for renewal as soon as possible.

Please remember that emergency in-person appointments at the Chicago Passport Agency are intended for emergencies and availability is not guaranteed unless it is a life or death emergency!

It is important to review all passports in your family for upcoming expiration. If a passport in your family expires in the next 6 months, please make an appointment at your local post office to get it renewed. We strongly encourage you to pay for expedited processing and shipping. Pending passports have been taking longer than usual; please give extra time when submitting a passport.

Constituent Service Hours

Yahalom Parent to Parent Support

This past week, Yahalom Chicago hosted a support group for mothers of children with mild developmental disabilities at the home of Blimi Jeremias. The evening consisted of five mothers who have older children with mild disabilities who, through sharing their knowledge, were able to guide a group of mothers with younger children on various topics of interest.

The feedback from some of the mothers who attended was extremely positive and Yahalom Chicago looks forward to hosting future similar events.

Over 70 Girls Attend Bnos Sponsored Hatazalah First Aid Presentation

Bnos Agudath Israel of Chicago is proud to announce that over 70 girls from the 7th & 8th grades recently attended a comprehensive First Aid presentation. The two classes were given by a Hatzalah female instructor (to enable hands-on demonstrations) on Wednesday, May 31, at the Hatzalah Chicago headquarters in Lincolnwood.

Aside from being shown how to respond to many common place injuries the girls were also shown how to perform potentially life-saving measures such as the Heimlich Maneuver and basic CPR. Before leaving, the girls were given a tour of the inside of a Hatzalah ambulance, along with explanations of the purpose of all the emergency medical equipment inside.

Speaking on behalf of all the girls who attended, Mrs. Suri Aron, Bnos Director, summed up the evening: "The classes were very informative, the instructor was excellent and all the girls left with the knowledge necessary to provide medical intervention if chas v'shalom needed."
