Statement of Agudath Israel of Illinois on the Governor's Veto of Faith by the Plate

Agudath Israel of Illinois (AIOI) is disappointed with Governor Pritzker's veto of legislation that would have paved the way for students, hospital patients, and incarcerated individuals to access meals that comply with their religious dietary restrictions. House Bill 3643 would have made Illinois the first state in the country to mandate such accommodations and had the potential to demonstrate the state's commitment to embracing diversity and inclusion in all its forms. AIOI has worked closely with stakeholders to ensure all faith-based communities have access to food that complies with their religious convictions and remains committed to achieving that goal.

Agudah's Connecticut Office Holds Waterbury Community Meeting with Police Department

Tuesday night, the Agudah's Connecticut office hosted a meeting with the Jewish community of Waterbury and Waterbury Chief of Police Fernando Spagnolo, President of the Board of Aldermen Paul Pernerewski, and Alderman Mike Salvio to discuss the sudden increase in crime affecting the Jewish community.

Chief Spagnolo detailed his department's efforts towards resolving the issue and addressed concerns from the audience. He highlighted the significance of reporting every crime no matter the size, as it helps the police department properly allocate resources. Additionally, he praised Waterbury's legislative delegation for advocating for laws to increase police officers' ability to deal with juvenile offenders.

"I really appreciate that Chief Spagnolo took the time to hear and address our concerns in person," said Avi Wisotsky, a member of the Waterbury community.

"We are grateful to Chief Spagnolo for his open communication with the community and conveying how much he and his officers care about those they protect," said Rabbi Ari Weisenfeld, director of Agudah's Connecticut Office. "I look forward to working with his office and the Waterbury delegation on potential legislative solutions to the current situation."

Strength and Support: YahalomNY Fathers' Night Out in Brooklyn

On Tuesday evening, YahalomNY, a division of Agudath Israel dedicated to supporting families with children with special needs, hosted a networking event for fathers of children with special needs. The theme of the evening was "Why Reinvent the Wheel?" – a message to the over 50 fathers who attended that as fathers with similar experiences, we can learn from each other. The event provided a much-needed platform for fathers to network, seek encouragement, and find inspiration in the company of those who understand their unique challenges.

Strength and Support: YahalomNY Fathers' Night Out in Brooklyn; continued...

Rav Yisroel Majeski, Rabbi of Kehillas Lev Simcha in Los Angeles, spoke to the attendees, blending wisdom and humor to offer the fathers a new perspective on the challenges they face. Professionals with expertise with children with special needs were on hand throughout the event to provide insights and answers, underscoring Yahalom's dedication to equipping parents with the education and resources they need to navigate their unique challenges. Throughout the event, Don Stern's singing and Mendy Mertz's music was a soothing backdrop.

"The event was much more than I could have hoped for," said one father. "Just to see how many people attended reinforced that as hard as we may find raising a child with special needs, we are not alone."

"This event really brought out the message of what YahalomNY is all about," said Miss Tova Wacholder, director of YahalomNY. "The fathers know that Yahalom is there for them, and they are there for each other."

YahalomNY thanks all the fathers who attended the inaugural event, creating a support system and sharing knowledge and hope. YahalomNY also thanks Moshe Fruchter for emceeing, the Heimlich family for graciously hosting the event, and founder of Highway of Hope Yehuda Gelman for attending.

YahalomNY is headed by Miss Tova Wacholder. To contact Miss Wacholder, please call 212-747-8763×324 or yahalomny@agudah.org.
