The reason for this is that from the perspective of the Forces of Evil, everything is only dictated by nature and atheistic ideology. And money represents all the abundance in the world along with these atheistic attitudes. Thus, even though Ephron originally wanted to give away the Cave for free, it was necessary for Avraham to pay for it in full, in order to take the holiness away from him.
