"When any of you brings an offering to the Lord from the livestock..." (Leviticus 1:2)

The main purpose of the sacrifices is to teach us about repentance and atonement for our actions.

When a person behaves like an animal and lowers themselves from the level of humanity to that of an animal, the Torah tells us that there is hope for them. They can bring an offering and confess their sins. Then, when the animal is slaughtered and the priest eats from the meat of the offering, he elevates it from the level of animals to that of humans.

This serves as a reminder that we are human beings, and it is incumbent upon us to behave as such. But God forbid, even if we fall, there is still hope!

Purim is a great day, and we can draw strength from it.

Queen Esther said to Mordekhai the tzaddik, "How can I come to the king, when I haven't been summoned for 30 days?" Sometimes a Jew reaches such a low level that even once a month he does not remember the Holy One, blessed be He - a very low and depressing state.

But Esther taught us a lesson for generations, that determination is stronger than any fall or decline in serving Hashem. "So I will come to the king, against the law; and if I perish, I perish."  In other words, I will continue to beseech the Holy One, blessed be He, and not give up in any situation in the world. And just as I have lost so much due to all my falls and sins, I continue to plead and ask the King of the World to draw me closer to Him.

Purim is the day when each one should turn to Hashem in hitbodedut and prayer, committing to it at any cost, not to give up and miss such an important day and opportunity once a year.

Happy Purim!

And have a great Shabbos!

Chaim Kramer
