Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah starts before sunset on Oct. 23 and goes right into Shabbat.
Simchat Torah

Dear Mr.

You are invited to join our Simchat Torah celebration! At thousands of Chabad Houses around the world, we are getting ready for a joyous Simchat Torah celebration, and your participation would add so much joy.

Yes, this will be an emotionally charged holiday, marking one full year since the attacks that have scarred our people and touched us all deep in our souls.

But dance we must. And dance we shall.

This year, there are captives, soldiers on active duty, and people on hospital beds who will not make it to synagogue (sadly, some may not even know what day it is). So let's dance even more, for them, with a prayer in our hearts that next year we will all dance together in Jerusalem.

We wish you a joyous holiday and hope to see you soon!

Your friends @ Chabad.org

P.S. For the third (and final) time this season, Jews in the diaspora will be setting an eruv tavshilin and then lighting Shabbat candles three evenings in a row.

11 things to do
before Simchat Torah
1
With all that's happening, it may take effort to make this holiday joyous and uplifting. Here are some videos from our team that tackle this challenge from different angles:

2
With two names ("Shemini Atzeret" is in the Torah, and the term "Simchat Torah" was introduced in the Middle Ages) and a range of emotions (we say Yizkor one day and dance with abandon on the next), this holiday must be unpacked and understood.

3
  • On Wednesday, say the holiday blessing (ideally before nightfall).
  • On Thursday, say the same blessing (after nightfall from a preexisting flame).
  • On Friday, say just the Shabbat blessing (well before nightfall from a preexisting flame).

4
Learn from the Rebbe about the unique joy and inner rhythm that radiates outward from this season to the entire year.

5
The synagogue service of this day is like no other, replete with dancing, singing, capering, and maybe even some (moderate) drinking in the synagogue.

6
In addition to challah (dipped in salt, not honey), your Simchat Torah meals should be festive and delicious. A Simchat Torah classic in many communities is stuffed cabbage (here's why).

7
Make sure you have enlightening and inspiring reading material so that every moment of the holiday is uplifting and memorable.

8
On the first day of the holiday we memorialize our departed loved ones.

9
On Simchat Torah we complete the annual cycle of reading the Torah and immediately start it again. This is an ideal time to rededicate ourselves to daily Torah study, completing the entire Torah in a year's time.

10
Get into the Simchat Torah mood with these coloring sheets, which you can either hang on the wall or turn into Simchat Torah Flags!
