THE BAIS HAVAAD HALACHA JOURNAL: Volume 5775 Issue IV Parshas Vayeira Do Me a Favor! Parameters of Midas Sedom
The Mishnah (Avos 5:10) makes the following statement: There are four dispositions among men. One who says, "What's mine is mine, and what's yours is yours"—this is an average personality trait. And some say, this is midas sedom. As we will see below, the latter opinion, which asserts that the disposition of "what's mine is mine, and what's yours is yours" is considered midas sedom, was accepted by Chazal in a halachic sense, giving rise to numerous practical ramifications. Before coming to the halachic question and debate, it is worth giving brief attention to the concept of midas sedom as mentioned in the Mishnah.
THE BAIS HAVAAD HALACHA JOURNAL: Volume 5775 Issue IV Parshas Vayeira Remembering Hurricane Sandy How Landlords and Tenants Dealt With Sandy by:Rav Dovid Grossman
t was just two years ago when Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on the lives of countless Jews on the East Coast with heavy flooding in some areas, and lengthy power disruptions in other places. For homeowners, damage from the hurricane meant serious financial loss. But what about renters and landlords? What did the various problems caused by Sandy mean for them?
NAALEH.COM and YU TORAH Sodom Secret PARSHAT VAYERA 5775 By: Mrs. Shira Smiles
One of the seminal events for the entire future history of Bnei Yisroel occurs not with our patriarchs but with Lot and his daughters in Sodom. Our Sages link Lot’s two daughters hanimtzaoth who are found in Sodom to the verse in Tehillim, “Motzoti Dovid avdi – I found my servant David.” Where did I find David, they ask? In Sodom. By this juxtaposition of phrases, our Sages explain that the entire reason for saving Lot and his daughters from the destruction of Sodom was for the purpose of the eventual birth of King David and ultimately of the Messiah.

RABBI WEIN ON VAYERA 5775
For the Jewish people, one of the hallmarks of our great founding parents was their ability to maintain communication with their Creator. God, so to speak, was a constant living presence in their lives, thoughts and actions. And they were able to hear God’s voice, though God has no voice, and to visualize God even though God has no physical appearance. God spoke to them through the inner voice of their own souls which was always longing to reunite with the source of life from which it came.
RABBI WEIN ON IKEA
The Swedish furniture maker IKEA made the headlines this past week, even though it was an innocent bystander to the war of words between the Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and his female Swedish counterpart. Reacting to Sweden's recognition of a Palestinian state on the West Bank, Lieberman caustically said that “the Middle East and the Palestinian – Israeli dispute is slightly more complicated than is assembling an IKEA furniture product.”
IKEA is the famous Swedish company that manufactures all types of furniture that the buyers must then assemble themselves using their own talents and time. IKEA has a number of large stores here in Israel and is a very popular product worldwide.
OU TORAH The Binding of Isaac(Parshas Vayeira 5775) By Britain's Former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks
“Take your son, your only son, the one you love—Isaac—and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” Thus begins one of the most famous episodes in the Torah, but also one of the most morally problematic.
The conventional reading of this passage is that Abraham was being asked to show that his love for God was supreme. He would show this by being willing to sacrifice the son for whom he had spent a lifetime waiting.
Why did God need to “test” Abraham, given that He knows the human heart better than we know it ourselves? Maimonides answers that God did not need Abraham to prove his love for Him. Rather the test was meant to establish for all time how far the fear and love of God must go.[1]
On this principle there was little argument. The story is about the awe and love of God. Kierkegaard wrote a book about it, Fear and Trembling,[2] and made the point that ethics is universal. It consists of general rules. But the love of God is particular. It is an I-Thou personal relationship. What Abraham underwent during the trial was, says Kierkegaard, a “teleological suspension of the ethical,” that is, a willingness to let the I-Thou love of God overrule the universal principles that bind humans to one another.
Rav Soloveitchik explained the episode in terms of his own well-known characterisation of the religious life as a dialectic between victory and defeat, majesty and humility, man-the-creative-master and man-the-obedient-servant.[3] There are times when “God tells man to withdraw from whatever man desires the most.” We must experience defeat as well as victory. Thus the binding of Isaac was not a once-only episode but rather a paradigm for the religious life as a whole. Wherever we have passionate desire – eating, drinking, physical relationship – there the Torah places limits on the satisfaction of desire. Precisely because we pride ourselves on the power of reason, the Torah includes chukkim, statutes, that are impenetrable to reason.
RAV KOOK ON Vayeira PART 2 : Abraham's Return from the Akeidah
The Akeidah, the Binding of Isaac, was over. Abraham passed this extraordinary test, and descended from the heights of Mount Moriah — both physically and spiritually. The Torah concludes the narrative with a description of Abraham's return to the world:
"Abraham returned to his young men; and they rose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived in Beersheba." (Gen. 22:19)
Why does the Torah mention that Abraham rejoined the young men he had left behind with the donkey? And why the emphasis on his return to Beersheba and settling there?
RAV KOOK ON Vayeira Part 1 : The Binding of Isaac
The great merit of Abraham’s trial of the Akeidah (the Binding of Isaac) is mentioned repeatedly in our prayers. It is a theme of central importance to Judaism. Yet one could ask a simple question: What is so profound, so amazing about the Akeidah? After all, it was common among certain pagan cults to sacrifice children (such as the idolatry of Molech). In what way did Abraham show greater love and self-sacrifice than the idol-worshippers of his time?

RABBI SHLOMO CARLEBACH DIVAR TORAH FOR CHAYEI SARAH FOR HIS YORTZEIT
MINCHA
YOU KNOW MY DARLING FRIENDS,WHAT IS Yitzchak all about? When it comes to the last few minutes of the day,Yitzchak shows up.Our holy father Yitzchak brought the prayer of mincha down to the world. You see what it is,when I wake up in the morning like Avraham Avinu I have so many gevalt plans for today but when the day is over gevalt I am broken.Let me share with you something so heartbreaking yet so beautiful In the Freidiker Rebbe diary(Sefer HaSichos the year 5708 p.227)he writes that when he was five years old he went on a walk with his father around mincha time, late afternoon. His father the Rashab asked him why is thesun red b/4 it sets? And this is what his father told him.Every morning when the sun begins to shine the sun isaying today I will bring Maschiach, today I will redeem the world. But then, when the day is over and it didn't happen, the sun is ashamed. So the sun gets red with shame. So the prayer of Mincha is whatever you hoped for this day,God says you didn't do it,but I give it to you as a gift.I don't want you to walk away from this day thinking you didn't do anything.for other divar torahs click here to buy on amazon The Torah Commentary of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach: Genesis, Part I

Officials used photos and phone data in the search for the identity of 17-year-old talmid yeshiva Shalom Aaron Ba’adani, who was listed in critical condition in Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. He was one of the victims in the Jerusalem vehicular terror attack on Wednesday 12 Marcheshvan but had no ID on him. It took officials about nine hours to identify him and locate family members.
The phone was found at the scene of the attack and it was first believed to have been dropped by one of the rescue workers. Only later on did they understand the phone belonged to the unidentified victim.
Hospital officials provided medical care but explained they were not responsible for identifying the terror victim. Zaka and other relevant organizations began the effort to identify him and notify his family.
Shalom’s parents were summoned to the hospital to make a positive identification. He remains in critical condition with a head injury. It appears he was riding a bicycle when the terrorist rammed his vehicle into him.

Rav Wolbe on Chumash Insights of Rav Shlomo Wolbe on the weekly Torah readings and the Festivals By Rabbi Yitzchok Caplan IS AT KESHER STAM
The eternal wisdom of Torah... seen through the eyes of a master of Mussar.
Rav Shlomo Wolbe zt'l — "The Mashgiach" — was one of the towering Torah personalities of the twentieth century, the quintessential educator who helped take the torch of the pre-war Mussar Movement and reignite it in the modern world. His teachings and his many sefarim, including Alei Shur, are classics of Jewish thought and hashkafah, studied and beloved throughout the Torah world.
For decades, Rav Wolbe gave regular discourses on the Torah, focusing his penetrating insight, broad knowledge, and profound understanding on the weekly parashah. In Rav Wolbe on Chumash Rabbi Yitzchok Caplan, Rav Wolbe's grandson, has collected Rav Wolbe's teachings, both from his weekly lectures and from his many sefarim, and melded them into a deep and yet accessible Torah work.
Rav Wolbe's every word was a mussar message, guiding us to greater self-awareness and growth, and affording us a better understanding of our own lives through the perspective of authentic Torah tradition. In these beautifully expressed essays we clearly hear the voices of Torah greats, from the Vilna Gaon to Rav Dessler, from Ramban to Rav Yerucham. And, of course, we hear the gentle and yet penetrating tones of The Mashgiach, Rav Wolbe, as he shares the treasures of the Torah's words.
Rav Wolbe on Chumash is a perfect book for the Shabbos table, or for any time we want to follow the wise guidance of this revered master of mussar.(From Artscroll)
