As we will see below, the latter opinion, which asserts that the disposition of "what's mine is mine, and what's yours is yours" is considered midas sedom, was accepted by Chazal in a halachic sense, giving rise to numerous practical ramifications. God, so to speak, was a constant living presence in their lives, thoughts and actions. And they were able to hear God’s voice, though God has no voice, and to visualize God even though God has no physical appearance. God spoke to them through the inner voice of their own souls which was always longing to reunite with the source of life from which it came.

The Swedish furniture maker IKEA made the headlines this past week, even though it was an innocent bystander to the war of words between the Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and his female Swedish counterpart. Reacting to Sweden's recognition of a Palestinian state on the West Bank, Lieberman caustically said that “the Middle East and the Palestinian – Israeli dispute is slightly more complicated than is assembling an IKEA furniture product.” IKEA is the famous Swedish company that manufactures all types of furniture that the buyers must then assemble themselves using their own talents and time. IKEA has a number of large stores here in Israel and is a very popular product worldwide.

“Take your son, your only son, the one you love—Isaac—and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” Thus begins one of the most famous episodes in the Torah, but also one of the most morally problematic. The conventional reading of this passage is that Abraham was being asked to show that his love for God was supreme. He would show this by being willing to sacrifice the son for whom he had spent a lifetime waiting. Why did God need to “test” Abraham, given that He knows the human heart better than we know it ourselves? Maimonides answers that God did not need Abraham to prove his love for Him. Rather the test was meant to establish for all time how far the fear and love of God must go.[1] On this principle there was little argument. The story is about the awe and love of God. Kierkegaard wrote a book about it, Fear and Trembling,[2] and made the point that ethics is universal. It consists of general rules. But the love of God is particular. It is an I-Thou personal relationship. What Abraham underwent during the trial was, says Kierkegaard, a “teleological suspension of the ethical,” that is, a willingness to let the I-Thou love of God overrule the universal principles that bind humans to one another. Rav Soloveitchik explained the episode in terms of his own well-known characterisation of the religious life as a dialectic between victory and defeat, majesty and humility, man-the-creative-master and man-the-obedient-servant.[3] There are times when “God tells man to withdraw from whatever man desires the most.” We must experience defeat as well as victory. Thus the binding of Isaac was not a once-only episode but rather a paradigm for the religious life as a whole. Wherever we have passionate desire – eating, drinking, physical relationship – there the Torah places limits on the satisfaction of desire. Precisely because we pride ourselves on the power of reason, the Torah includes chukkim, statutes, that are impenetrable to reason.

And Abraham lived in Beersheba." (Gen. 22:19) Why does the Torah mention that Abraham rejoined the young men he had left behind with the donkey? Please daven for Shalom Aharon ben Nava. Officials used photos and phone data in the search for the identity of 17-year-old talmid yeshiva Shalom Aaron Ba’adani, who was listed in critical condition in Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital. He was one of the victims in the Jerusalem vehicular terror attack on Wednesday 12 Marcheshvan but had no ID on him. It took officials about nine hours to identify him and locate family members. The phone was found at the scene of the attack and it was first believed to have been dropped by one of the rescue workers. Only later on did they understand the phone belonged to the unidentified victim. Hospital officials provided medical care but explained they were not responsible for identifying the terror victim. Zaka and other relevant organizations began the effort to identify him and notify his family. Shalom’s parents were summoned to the hospital to make a positive identification. He remains in critical condition with a head injury. It appears he was riding a bicycle when the terrorist rammed his vehicle into him. Shalom is a grandson of Rabbi Shimon Ba’adani Shlita, who is a member of Shas’ Moetzas Gedolei Yisrael. As a result visitors to the hospital include members of the Shas party. The tzibur is urged to be mispallel for Shalom Aharon ben Nava bsoch cholei Am Yisrael.

JI “Im Amarti Matah Ragli” Udi Davidi Sings R’ Meir Shapiro of Lublin

Singer and composer Udi Davidi is releasing a Chassidic song for the first time. A number of months after the release of the album Mechakeh LeSheket, which has already been chosen as the album of the year by a number of places, he is releasing a new song together with Israel’s Yedidim Choir. The song entitled Im Amarti Matah Ragli, composed originally by R’ Meir Shapiro of Lublin, the Rosh Yeshiva of Chachmei Lublin and establisher of the Daf Yomi program, whose Yahrtzeit fell out this Shabbos.

Hundreds and thousands of people attended a special event at the Kever of Maran Rav Ovadia Yosef on his yahrtzeit last week, Gimmel Cheshvan. The event was broadcast live on Radio Kol Berama, on the popular Chidodon channel. On top of the musical accompaniment was singer Avi Ben Yisrael.
