COVID-19 Booster Shots The CDC has officially expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots. Thousands of Chicago residents can now get an additional shot to keep themselves and our community safe. Boosters are free and widely available across the City of Chicago, including at pharmacies and healthcare providers.
The current recommendations are as follows:
For those who received a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine series, the following groups are eligible for a booster shot at 6 months or more after their initial series: For those who received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine, boosters are recommended for everyone 18 and older at least 2 months after receiving their shot.
People who are moderately to severely immunocompromised should consult with their health care provider about timing and dosage of vaccines. For more information about the recommendations, click here.
Help Support Warren Park Improvement I am pleased to report that a local project has been chosen as a semi-finalist in the Chicago Works Community Challenge for the North Region. It is now competing against two other projects to win a grant of up to $1.5 million!
The local proposal is for recreation enhancements at Warren Park. If approved, the project would tear down the broken batting cages at the park and create a multi-purpose volleyball court area, a new cricket practice area, and a Nature Play Space.

The Chicago Works Community Challenge will provide funding for infrastructure enhancements across the city. Funding of up to $1.5 million will be provided in each of Chicago's seven planning districts. The Warren Park proposal is a semi-finalist for the North Region. Congratulations to Decatur!
The 50th Ward's own Decatur Classical School was just selected as the 3rd best elementary school in the entire State of Illinois! The U.S. News and World Report ranking reflects the school's strong commitment to providing the highest quality education to our children. Congratulations to the principal, teachers and students who make Decatur so amazing!
Under the rankings, four out of the five best elementary schools in Illinois are Chicago Public Schools, and all five of the best high schools are CPS schools.

Apply Now for a Grant to Improve Your Business Many local small business owners can now apply for funding to improve their facilities. The City of Chicago will accept Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) applications from business owners in the Touhy/Western TIF until 5 p.m. on Monday, November 1.
The SBIF program uses Tax Increment Financing (TIF) revenue to help owners repair or remodel their facilities and improve their businesses. Tenant businesses are also eligible to apply. Grants up to $150,000 are available for commercial properties and $250,000 for industrial properties.
The current round of funding is only available for 50th Ward businesses within the Touhy/Western TIF. To find out if your business is within the TIF, visit https://webapps1.cityofchicago.org/ChicagoTif.
Interested businesses and property owners can visit somercor.com/sbif to find the application. The Chicago Department of Planning and Development has also released a presentation explaining the program. You can view a recording here.
Police CAPS Meetings There will be two CAPS meetings this week, covering the entire area of the 50th Ward that is south of Devon Avenue.
The CAPS meeting for Beat 2413, stretching from Devon to Peterson and from Kedzie to Ridge, will be held in-person on Tuesday, October 26 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Green Briar Park, 2650 W. Peterson.
The CAPS meeting for Beat 1711, which encompasses Peterson Park, will be held over Zoom on Wednesday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m. Register at https://bit.ly/3C3pjYZ.

Halloween Safety Guidelines Halloween is just around the corner, and the City of Chicago has issued guidelines on how to have a fun and safe holiday, despite the pandemic.
Here are the nine guidelines to have a safe Halloween this year:
1: Masks are recommended for unvaccinated children Trick-or-Treating outdoors this year whenever social distancing is not possible.
2: Trick-or-Treating? Stay on the move! Less congregating means more houses and more candy.
3: Keep your candy crew small – choose a small group of friends to Trick-or-Treat with.
4: Eat candy at home, or after washing or sanitizing your hands.
5: Handing out candy? Please wear a mask while interacting with children and socially distance. Please use hand sanitizer before handing out candy.
6: Leave a light on or hang a Halloween sign in your window to let others know your house is participating in safe Trick-or-Treating.
7: Do not hand out candy or participate in Halloween events if you are having symptoms of COVID-19 or feel sick, even if you have been fully vaccinated.
8: Outdoor activities are safer than indoor activities – Masks are not required outdoors when everyone can social distance.
9: For indoor activities such as Haunted Houses or Halloween events – masks should be worn by anyone age 2 and older. Increase ventilation by opening outside windows.

Zip code 60645 has a vaccination rate of 84.2% with at least one dose for those age 12 and older as of 10/20/2021 (68.0% of the entire population). This is higher than the citywide average of 74.6%. To date, 77.6% of those 12+ have completed a vaccine series.
Zip code 60659 has a vaccination rate of 79.0% with at least one dose for those age 12 and older as of 10/20/2021 (64.7% of the entire population). This is higher than the citywide average of 74.6%. To date, 73.1% of those 12+ have completed a vaccine series.
| | 50th Ward Donation Drive
We are collecting donations of non-perishable food, diapers and infant formula at the 50th Ward Office. Many of our neighbors are still grappling with the economic ramifications of COVID-19, and any goods you can spare will make a tremendous difference to those in need.
Drop off donations at 2949 W. Devon during regular business hours. Call before coming to make sure a staff member is available to pick up the donation outside the office. Staff will wear masks and gloves and follow social distancing procedures.
Please consider donating. Every item helps!
Stormwater Management Tips for Fall and Winter
The Department of Water Management reminds residents to be mindful of stormwater in the fall and winter months. Stormwater management can greatly reduce backups and flooding in basements when water and waste in overwhelmed sewers have nowhere else to go.
By reducing your water output during storms, making sure only rain goes down the drain, disposing of fats, oils, and greases properly, and disconnecting your downspout you can help keep the sewers flowing and water out of your basement.
Please remember the following tips to effective manage stormwater: - Sweep up leaves from driveways, sidewalks, and streets.
- Clean roof gutters and drains of leaves.
- Keep nearby catch basin grates clear of yard waste and trash.
- Do not litter or dump anything in storm drains. Storm drains are for rain only.
- Avoid running a dishwasher or washing machine during storms.
- Use a commercial car wash or wash your car over grass or gravel instead of on a driveway or in the street.
- Do not dump fats/oils/greases in private drains.
- Disconnect your downspout from the sewer system. See DWM's website here for a guide on downspout disconnection.
- Before winter, empty your rain barrel and store in a garage or shed.
