News from the Agudah:

  • Last July, Ben & Jerry's decided to take part in the antisemitic BDS movement and refuse sale of its products in parts of Israel. At the time Agudah called on states to implement their anti-BDS laws, and for its parent Unilever to end the boycott. Today, Unilever announced that it has sold its Ben & Jerry's business interests to its Israeli licensee, ending the boycott. See below to read more.

  • In a span of one week the US Supreme Court issued two major decisions related to religious freedom. In Carson v. Makin, a 6-3 majority held that a tuition assistance program in Maine that excluded religious private schools was unconstitutional. A few days later, the Court, in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, effectively overturned the 1971 Lemon v. Kurtzman decision, a position for which Agudah has long advocated. Agudath Israel's national director of state relations, Rabbi A.D. Motzen, spoke with noted constitutional scholar Nathan Lewin on Sunday, the day before the Kennedy v. Bremerton School District ruling was issued. They discussed the ramifications of the Carson decision and what could happen to yeshiva tuition if Lemon v. Kurtzman was overturned, something that Mr. Lewin's brief on behalf of COLPA (National Jewish Commission on Law and Public Affairs) argued in the Carson case. • In a rite of passage that is among the highlights of COPE Institute's Junior Accounting course, Roth&Co founder and managing partner Abe Roth shared valuable insights with the program's students on a variety of topics during a June 15th Lunch and Learn seminar. See below for more details.
Agudath Israel Applauds Unilever for Ending Ben & Jerry's Participation in Antisemitic BDS Movement
Agudath Israel applauds Unilever's announcement today that it has sold its Ben & Jerry's business interests to its Israeli licensee to end Ben & Jerry's antisemitic BDS practices there.

Last summer, as part of its social mission, Ben & Jerry's decided to refuse sale of its products in parts of Israel, including East Jerusalem. At that time, Agudath Israel and other groups called on Unilever and Ben & Jerry's to reverse the boycott.

Ben & Jerry's controversial move led to significant legal and financial woes for it and its parent company, including lost business interests in many states which divested their pension funds of Unilever. Agudath Israel reiterates its commendation of those states and localities which responded to this boycott by cutting their financial relationships with Unilever based on their anti-BDS laws.

Agudath Israel's position has always been that the BDS movement is a manifestation of animus against Jews as a people. We are on longstanding record as advocating for anti-BDS laws across the United States, and have defended their constitutionality in courts of law. Most recently, Agudath Israel filed a brief defending the constitutionality of Arkansas' anti-BDS law. Last week, the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals upheld that position.

Roth&Co. Founder Shares Valuable Business Insights with COPE Junior Accounting Program
In a rite of passage that is among the highlights of COPE Institute's Junior Accounting course, Roth&Co founder and managing partner Abe Roth shared valuable insights with the program's students on a variety of topics during a June 15th Lunch and Learn seminar.

Providing students with a wealth of information in the final days of the three to six month course, the seminar supplements their textbook learning with practical advice for their upcoming employment search and their future careers. Roth&Co is one of many prominent firms that hires graduates of COPE's business and junior accounting program.

Mr. Roth noted that he has seen for himself how graduates of COPE, a division of Agudath Israel of America, are extremely well prepared for the job market, their technical background in bookkeeping and accounting giving them a distinct advantage over others entering the field. He emphasized the importance of having a positive attitude and a willingness to go above and beyond as important assets for those looking to succeed in their careers.

Despite today's difficult economic climate, Mr. Roth expressed his confidence in the field as a solid choice for members of the Orthodox Jewish community. He observed that there are many job opportunities available to qualified individuals, with those hailing from the heimishe community often regarded as being honest, talented and dedicated employees. Mr. Roth also noted that the accounting world is extremely diverse, with opportunities and advancement possibilities available in businesses large and small, the government and the nonprofit arena, among others.

While COPE students are eminently qualified to enter the job market after completing the Junior Accounting course, which also provides invaluable knowledge for anyone entering the world of business, Mr. Roth advised those looking to further their careers to continue on with COPE's CPA program. He explained that having a CPA can open many doors in the world of accounting.

"Like everything in life, if you want to get to the best position, don't stop in the middle," advised Mr. Roth adding, "Anything you'll do in accounting, you'll see you're in a better position if you're a CPA. I think that a serious percentage of businessmen cannot define what a CPA is, but they know those three letters mean something and that this guy is better than the guy who doesn't have."

With remote work commonly accepted today, there are more options than ever for accountants. While private industries may offer higher salaries than accounting firms at this time, Mr. Roth is a big believer in working for an established accounting firm, especially for entry level positions, because they offer the type of experience that he described as "invaluable." In addition to hiring junior accountants who have completed their coursework, Roth&Co. currently has a number of junior accounting interns who are still in school.

"They get to see thirty, forty different kinds of businesses in the period of a year – you cannot compete with that," said Mr. Roth.

COPE's next Junior Accounting course begins on July 5th. To register or for more information, visit COPE online at www.copeeducation.com or call 718-506-0500 x 218.
