Virtual Meetings with Illinois Senators and Congressmen

In response to the devastating attacks in Israel and the issues related to the ongoing war with Hamas, Agudath Israel of Illinois has been organizing a virtual meeting with our US Senators and Congresspersons. On Monday and Tuesday, AIOI invited a rabbinic and community lay leaders to engage in dialogue over the most pressing issues with Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-08), and Congresswoman Delia Ramirez (D-03). With the goals of thanking those who have been unwavering in their public support, communicating concerns and policy priorities, and sharing perspectives with members of congress, all the meetings were passionate and productive. More meetings are scheduled this week with Senator Dick Durbin, Congressman Mike Quigley, Congressman Darin LaHood, and others.

Kosher-Halal Bill Overrides Veto and Passes in the Senate

Following a gubernatorial veto of the kosher-halal bill advocated for by Agudath Israel of Illinois, AIOI, together with Senator Villivalam and other stakeholders, worked to address the administration's concerns and reintroduce the bill during the legislature's veto session. Senator Villivalam filed a revised bill and it passed the Senate on Wednesday, October 25th. Senate Bill 457 now heads to the House and will hopefully be taken up by the lower chamber next week. Agudath Israel of Illinois would like to thank Chief Senate sponsor Senator Ram Villivalam, as well as cosponsors Senator Sara Feigenholtz, Senator Adriane Johnson, and Senator Rachel Ventura. Rabbi Shlomo Soroka, AIOI's director of government affairs was quoted by the Senate Democrats in their press release: "We are extremely pleased with this agreement that would provide students with meal options that comply with their religious dietary needs. We thank the governor and his team for working in good faith with Agudath Israel, Senator Villivalam, our Muslim partners, and other stakeholders in reaching this milestone."

STC Update

On Tuesday, House Bill 4194 was filed by Representative Angelica Guerrero-Cuellar. Representative Lisa Hernandez and Representative Kelly Burke were also added as chief cosponsors. Leader Burke is chair of the House Revenue and Finance Committee, to which this bill would be assigned, and Leader Hernandez is the chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois (DPI). Over the next week AIOI's hope is to add on a group of cosponsors from multiple sub-caucuses, demonstrating the diversity of supporters of this program. The statewide "Save My Scholarship" campaign is in full throttle as the coalition continues to send mailers, hold rallies (including at the governor's office), facilitate media coverage, purchase digital and radio advertising, and engage in outreach through influential leaders in the state. While there are no guarantees and there remains a steep hill ahead to climb, there is hope. The House and Senate return to Springfield November 7th for the last three days of veto session when this issue will be addressed.
