School Choice Advances in Washington!

Rabbi Shlomo Soroka with Congressman Mike Bost (R-12)

Agudath Israel of Illinois delegation meeting with House Ways & Means Commitee member Congressman Darin LaHood (D-16)

Agudath Israel of Illinois delegation in Washington DC to advocate for ECCA

It's official. School Choice for all 50 states is moving forward in the US House.

Late last night the House Budget Committee passed the multi-trillion dollar budget reconciliation bill! The "One Big Beautiful Bill" bill now moves forward to the Rules Committee before a full House vote expected by the end of the week.

What is our number one priority?

  • The Educational Choice for Children Act (ECCA): Together with other allies, Agudah has focused its energies on this one item in the 1100-page bill that extends the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act among many other priorities of President Trump and Congressional leadership.

  • ECCA is a federal scholarship tax credit proposal that will provide K-12 scholarships to millions of children. Click here to learn more.

  • The Agudah has been working on a federal scholarship bill for many years and the reconciliation bill presents a once in a generation opportunity to make this become a reality.

  • The House version allocated $5 billion per year among other changes from the original $10 billion annual bill, but we are working with our friends in the Senate to expand the proposal and make it "bigger and more beautiful."

  • Other Agudah priorities in the reconciliation bill include an expanded child tax credit which makes the 2017 doubling of the credit to $2,000 permanent and a temporary $500 boost to the credit ($2,500 per child) from 2025 through 2028, and a charitable deduction for nonitemizers set at $150 ($300 for joint filers).

As the bill continues to move through the House and to the Senate, the Agudah will continue to intensify our advocacy efforts to ensure that the proposal is improved upon and ultimately passes, making school choice a reality in all 50 states.
