"And I pleaded with HaShem at that time, saying…" (Devarim 3:23) The Midrash teaches that there exists a hidden treasury called Otzar Matnas Chinom—the Treasury of Unearned Gifts—from which the world, through the tzaddikim, receives its life force and sustenance. It is this spiritual power that sustained the world even before the giving of the Torah, when there were no merits to justify its existence. This very force also granted the Jewish people the strength to conquer the Land of Israel. When Moshe Rabbeinu begged and prayed to enter Eretz Yisrael, he pleaded that his request be answered not in the merit of his many righteous deeds, but rather from the Otzar Matnas Chinom—the treasury of unearned kindness. "At that time" (ba'eis ha'hi) hints to that concealed period in which the world received its vitality solely through this hidden gift, not through revealed merits. This offers powerful encouragement to each of us: even in our lowest and most painful moments of spiritual descent, if we cry out and ask HaShem to bring us close to Him in the merit of the Otzar Matnas Chinom, we too can receive this same sustaining force—through the tzaddikim. It is a light that transcends all barriers and obstacles, a force rooted in the very foundation of the world, capable of lifting us from any fall. May we merit to truly connect to the tzaddikim and to receive from this wondrous treasury, Amen. Shabbat Shalom |
