Introduction

Aside from the prohibitions of performing business on Shabbos and of having a non-Jew do work for you on Shabbos, there is an additional prohibition of "schar shabbos", i.e., a Jew cannot accept or benefit from money that was earned on Shabbos even where no melachah was involved. This includes wages for non-melachah work, as well as income from rentals and interest payments.

Points to Ponder

• Does the prohibition of schar shabbos apply to mitzvah work, such as a baal tefilla or baal tokeah? • What is the leniency of havla'ah, and how does it work? • If a worker is paid by the hour, does havla'ah apply at all? • If one has already accepted money that he earned on Shabbos, what should he do now?
