Sukkot

Dear Mr. Chroman,

Ahh … Sukkot, the "Season of our Rejoicing," is in the air. Our souls have been cleansed and polished on Yom Kippur and are ready to soar on Sukkot, when we take the lulav and etrog and savor the sukkah's sacred space.

But one second! Many of us are struggling with how to celebrate after a year like this. We've just learned of a terrible attack on a synagogue in Manchester over Yom Kippur, our brothers and sisters are still being held in Gaza, and the war against Hamas is still ongoing!

Is it even right to celebrate Sukkot? The Torah's answer is a resounding yes. As the Rebbe taught, whatever we normally accomplish through tearful supplication can now be done through joy and faith. This is the moment to celebrate—in public—and more than ever before!

We wish you a joyous Sukkot and a year of peace and tranquility for all!

10 things to do
before Sukkot
1
Brush Up on Sukkot
Need a refresher course on this holiday, its meaning, and observances? We've got you covered!

2
Get the Four Kinds
Every day of Sukkot (besides Shabbat), we take the Four Kinds (a palm frond, two willows, three myrtles, and an etrog fruit) for a brief blessing.

3
Build a Sukkah
For the duration of Sukkot, we enjoy our meals and otherwise "dwell" in the sukkah, a shelter with a roof of unprocessed plant material. Build your own sukkah or make arrangements to use a friend's.

4
Get the Times Straight
Both holiday nighttime meals are enjoyed in the glow of our candles. Get ready to light candles in the sukkah (weather permitting). Print candle lighting times, as well as when the holiday begins and ends in your area.

5
Cook Up Sukkot Specialties
With at least 14 meals in the Sukkah (16 in the diaspora), there are plenty of occasions to enjoy holiday favorites, as well as to try out some new ones.

6
Read Sukkot Essays
Sukkot is rich with meaning, symbolism, and inspiration. Unpack and internalize what it means to you, as well as how it became the holiday we know and love today.

7
Experience Sukkot With the Rebbe
The Rebbe explored many Sukkot themes deeply, at times speaking publicly every night of the holiday.

8
Print the DIY Booklet
In ancient times, Sukkot was celebrated with all-night dancing, singing and celebrating in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. We've published a DIY guide for your Sukkot celebration.

9
Take a Quiz
Found everything you need, and feel ready for a joy-filled Sukkot? Take our quiz to see how well you know this special holiday.

10
Gear Up for Simchat Torah
This is the day when we dance, celebrate, and just be happy to be G-d's chosen people, recipients of His Torah. Wondering how we do it?
