The ship carries within it the story of the daf, the story of Klal Yisroel, and the meaning of the long journey that leads to the day of the Siyum. Chazal tell us ( יבמות דף קכ״א ) that רבי עקיבא was once saved at sea by holding on to a דף של ספינה, a plank of a ship, against the crashing waves. Rav Meir Shapiro saw in this an allusion to the דף גמרא — the page to which a Yid holds fast as he makes his way through the waves and upheavals of the generations.
This is the דף של ספינה of Klal Yisroel.
Generations come and go. Countries change, societies change, and the waves of galus rise and fall around us. But the דף remains in our hands. Another דף, and then another. The same דף learned in the בית המדרש, at home, on the road, and in every corner of the world. Like a ship making its way through a turbulent sea toward safe harbor, Klal Yisroel continues its journey with the דף גמרא in hand.
That is why the symbol takes the form of a ship whose sails themselves resemble open pages of Gemara. Page follows page. One דף joins another, one מסכת joins the next, until those pages become the force that carries the journey forward.
And this continues the idea of מסכת itself. Just as thread after thread is woven until a complete fabric emerges, so too דף after דף becomes a מסכת, and מסכת after מסכת becomes an entire world of Torah. And when we reach the end, we do not truly arrive at an ending. We return to the beginning and begin again. |
