“A foolish and unwise people” (Deuteronomy 32:6)
Onkelos translates: “A people who accepted the Torah but did not act with cleverness.”

In the story of the Sophisticate and the Simpleton, it is told that when the king saw in the population records that there was a sophisticate and a simpleton, he sent a messenger with a letter to the simpleton and a letter to the sophisticate.

Rabbi Avraham ben Rebbe Nachman teaches that this alludes to the way Hashem sought those who would accept the Torah at the Giving of the Torah.

The nations of the world approached it with calculations and intellectual arguments and rejected it, while the Jewish people, as Onkelos explains, accepted it without sophistication - simply and wholeheartedly.

According to this understanding, the verse becomes a great praise of the Jewish people and a true lesson for us:

When we see a message from Hashem, or learn something in the Torah, we should accept it as it is, without mixing in our own clever calculations.

Rather, with simplicity and wholeheartedness, we should fulfill the Torah and the guidance revealed through the true Tzaddikim. Then we merit to believe that there is a King in the world, and that our task is to serve Him.

May we merit this with simplicity and wholeheartedness!

BRI TORAH TIDBITS

“Days were fashioned, and for Him there was one among them” (Psalms 139:16)
Rashi: This refers to Yom Kippur, the day of forgiveness.

In Torah 54, Rabbeinu teaches that a Jew must always remember that there is an eternal world, and that everything we experience in this world is only in order to attain that eternal purpose.

The only way we can remember this is through tzimtzum - meaning, to believe and internalize that Hashem is with us at every moment and in every place.

The reason we forget this is “the death of the heart” - when the heart becomes hardened, stops feeling, and sinks into imagination instead of living in reality, which is the remembrance of the World to Come.

This remembrance exists on three levels: person, place, and time, which are the very foundations of reality. Throughout our lives, we must struggle to live in this reality and not in imagination:

The person - represents every Jew.
The place - Eretz Yisrael, whose root is the Even HaShetiyah and the Beit HaMikdash.
The time - Yom Kippur.

Once a year, the Kohen Gadol (the person) entered the Kodesh HaKodashim (the place) on Yom Kippur (the time). These are the three root foundations of the world’s existence in the remembrance of the World to Come, and from there this remembrance extends to every Jew, in every situation—even the lowest—and in every place in the world.

The more we believe that this tzimtzum exists, the more we can believe that Hashem is with us in every situation and descends all the way down to us.

The reason we become distant from Him is that we do not believe in the secret of this tzimtzum, and we are not ready to accept how such an Infinite One can descend to a level as low as the one we find ourselves in.

But the moment we remember Him in every place and situation and call out to Him, in that very moment we become included in the Infinite and merit to remember the World to Come. This is a wondrous connection revealed through the power of this holy day.

May it be His will that we merit to always remember the World to Come, and that even if, God forbid, we fall, we remember that through the merit of this holy day, we always have hope. Amen!

Shabbat Shalom and G'mar Chatimah Tovah!
