Tefillos Requested as Hadassah Gruen Back in ICU Wednesday Night By Hamodia Staff Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 7:02 am | ט' אלול תשע"זUpdated Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 12:49 pm   Hadassah Gruen, who was seriously injured in the Pennsylvania car accident two weeks ago was admitted back to the ICU Wednesday night, after having been released from the ICU several days earlier.   Hadassah has suffered terrible physical injuries, and her sister Chava has suffered a serious brain injury.   The Gruen family also shared some good news this week: One day earlier this week, the father, Avi Gruen started talking to his daughter Chava, and she smiled.   Michal, the mother, wrote on social media: “It was the most amazing sight I’ve ever seen in my life. Hashem is unbelievable, He knew I was having a hard day and feeling down and He gave me the greatest gift I could have ever asked for. It seems as if she is not aware of anything, but her smile is hope that she is listening to and hears us!!”   Chava has also squeezed her parents’ hands, and on Tuesday, she coughed, which nurses say is a good sign.   In the wake of the accident, Klal Yisrael has sprung into action, raising much-needed funds to assist the family in their hour of need, and storming the gates of Heaven with tearful tefillos and mitzvos for the zechus of a complete, speedy refuah and yeshuah for the family. Please continue to daven and perform mitzvos for the refuah sheleimah of Leah Hadassah bas Michal Chana, and Chava bas Michal Chana, b’soch she’ar cholei Yisrael.

An Orthodox Jewish couple was killed and their daughter hospitalized after a fire ripped through their home in Boro Park, Brooklyn early Monday morning. WABC Authorities say two people are dead after a fire early Monday in Brooklyn. The 3-alarm fire broke out at about 4 a.m. in a two and a half story house on 44th Street in Borough Park. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames on the first floor. By the time they got into the home, the fire had spread to the second floor. The victims, a 61-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, were found unconscious in a back bedroom. Both were pronounced dead at Maimonides Hospital. Their daughter is in stable condition. The fire has been placed under control. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. The couple has been identified as R’ Chaim Eluzer Shulem (ben Tuvia Gedalia) Gluck Z”L and Mrs. Faigy Gluck A”H, The Yeshiva World News reported. A person who Davens with the R' Gluck every morning called him "an extremely special person," and told Yeshiva World News that R’ Chaim was the one who arrived at Shul first and was the one to unlock the K’hal Ohr Chaim Shul where he attended, and open the building at 4:30AM every single morning. "The entire Shul was crying by 5:30AM when they realized who was killed in the fire," he told Yeshiva World News. The Levaya will be held on Monday at Shomrei Hadas Chapels in Boro Park at 2:30 pm. Please say Tehillim for Chana bas Chava Faiga, who suffered severe smoke inhalation. Boruch Dayan Ha’Emes

Help the Jewish Community of Houston

OU

Dear Supporter,

As you are no doubt aware, the community in Houston, Texas is in the crosshairs of a devastating storm that has already flooded many neighborhoods and will likely cause much more damage in the next 24-48 hours.

In the words of the president of one of the shuls in Houston: "We will need major help. This is the worst flooding in Houston history! All homes are now under water! Between inches and 6'. Shul has 4'-8' - can't even get close. And there may be another 24-48 hrs of this. We will need to have serious conversations about restarting a community. I know that sounds extreme, but this is the big one!"

As a community, this is our opportunity to stand together and show our brothers and sisters in Houston that we stand with them in the spirit of Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh Bazeh - that all of our people stand together as one.

Here are two ways you can help.

  1. National Chizuk U'Tefilla Campaign - As Jews, we believe in the power of Tefilla (prayer), and we must also show those who are facing devastation in Houston that they have brethren from far and wide who care about them. Please use this link to commit to recite Tehillim for the Zechut (merit) of the Houston community and you can also post messages of chizuk (support) that will be passed directly on to members of the community.

  2. Emergency Fundraising Campaign - As we work with the community to understand their specific needs, we will update our website with more information. Our full emergency fundraising campaign will launch with the next 24-48 hours. But for now - please click here to donate to the OU's disaster relief fund in support of the Jewish community in Houston.
May the merit of Klal Yisrael coming together to support a community in crisis bring us all a Shana Tovah.

With Gratitude,

Moishe Bane, President

Aneinu Daven For People in Texas Grappling with Hurricane

excerpts from Arutz 7 below 300,000 people are reported to have lost electricity, and ports, train stations, and airports are still closed. Houston, Texas' World Bnei Akiva team announced on Friday that prayers would be canceled and the synagogue closed due to Hurricane Harvey. Harvey hit Texas on Friday night as a Category 4 hurricane, with winds gusting at up to 130 miles per hour. World Bnei Akiva emissary Rafi Engelhart said, "We're preparing for the worst. If there are a few centimeters of water in our home, we'll go to a friend's house that's a bit higher up. We've taken most of the chairs out of the synagogue, and placed the prayer books on the top shelves." "Obviously every family has a lot to worry about. There may be a lot of damage to property, cars, and homes, but there isn't a threat to life." He added that the Friday night and Saturday morning prayers would take place as scheduled, but Saturday afternoon and evening prayers had been canceled. World Bnei Akiva activities scheduled for Sunday have been canceled as well. "Our community consists both of people whose homes are hurricane-proof, and those whose homes are ordinary," he said. "Those who have relatively low homes will place everything valuable on chairs and chests, and ensure everything is stable and can withstand possible flooding. They also ensure that there is enough water for drinking, because when there is flooding, the water becomes contaminated. They also make sure to stock up on food, because there is a fear of flooding on the roads, which will not make it possible to reach the supermarket." Rafi and his wife Shifra do not intend to leave the area, though, since they have friends who are staying put. "The Torah teaches us that we should not abandon the public in times of trouble, so we are staying here in the meantime," Rafi said. 300,000 people are reported to have lost electricity, and ports, train stations, and airports are still closed. "This is going to be an unprecedented long and frustrating event for the state of Texas," US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director Brock Long told MSNBC on Saturday. "The recovery from this disaster is going to be years."

OU TORAH Why Civilisations Fail By Britain's Former Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks

What is the real challenge of maintaining a free society? In parshat Eikev, Moses springs his great surprise. Here are his words: Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God… Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery… You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.”… If you ever forget the Lord your God… I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. (Deut. 8:11-19) What Moses was saying to the new generation was this: You thought that the forty years of wandering in the wilderness were the real challenge, and that once you conquer and settle the land, your problems will be over. The truth is that it is then that the real challenge will begin. It will be precisely when all your physical needs are met – when you have land and sovereignty and rich harvests and safe homes – that your spiritual trial will commence. The real challenge is not poverty but affluence, not insecurity but security, not slavery but freedom. Moses, for the first time in history, was hinting at a law of history. Many centuries later it was articulated by the great 14th century Islamic thinker, Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), by the Italian political philosopher Giambattista Vico (1668-1744), and most recently by the Harvard historian Niall Ferguson. Moses was giving an account of the decline and fall of civilisations.
