It is my sad duty to report that there was another antisemitic incident in our neighborhood this morning. A man was threatened while on his way to synagogue by several men in a vehicle. The suspects then proceeded to break a car window close to the shul. Thankfully, the man was unharmed.
This disturbing incident comes after the police made an arrest in conjunction with the weekend's spate of hateful and cowardly crimes against the Jewish community.
The suspect in custody, Shahid Hussain, has been charged with federal hate crimes and criminal damage to property for his targeted damage to synagogues and schools in the 50th Ward. | |  | | Click on the image to see video of the press conference with Police Superintendent David Brown and Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx | | The police are still investigating this morning's case. I will update you when more information becomes available.
What is clear is that we need to act now to stop antisemitism and hate before they are allowed to spread. The local police are putting heightened attention on synagogues, schools, and places of worship. The City of Chicago stands with the Jewish community, and we will do whatever is necessary to keep this neighborhood safe.
These incidents come mere days after Holocaust Remembrance Day, and as antisemitism is on the rise across the country. I want to assure everyone in the Jewish community that you are not alone.
