Agudath Israel Applauds Illinois Governor Pritzker's Proposal to Fund the State's Nonprofit Security Grant Program for the First Time
Actions speak louder than words. That is why Agudath Israel of Illinois (AIOI) applauds Governor J.B. Pritzker for including, for the first time, a $20 million appropriation towards the Illinois At-risk Nonprofit Security Grant Program in his budget proposal released today. Following recent events in Colleyville, and the recent spate of antisemitic hate crimes perpetrated against the Orthodox Jewish community in Chicago, many elected officials spoke out against antisemitism, a much-appreciated gesture. However, with hate crimes at their highest point in over a decade, the threat to the Orthodox Jewish community, as well as other minority communities, is real and needs a stronger response. The Governor's commitment to providing funding towards protecting targeted communities is a significant step in the fight against hate and terror.

In 2017, following a wave of bomb threats to Jewish community centers, Jewish schools, and other antisemitic incidents, AIOI successfully advocated for an anti-terror security grant program. While the program was enacted into law, it never received funding, despite several prior attempts. Recently, appropriation bills to fund the program were sponsored by State Representative Bob Morgan (D – Deerfield) and State Senator Ram Villivalam (D – Chicago). Co-sponsors of these bills included State Senators Laura Fine (D – Glenview) and Sara Feigenholtz (D – Chicago) and State Representatives Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz (D – Skokie), Kam Buckner (D – Chicago), Robyn Gabel (D – Evanston), Dan Didech (D – Buffalo Grove), Denyse Wang Stoneback (D – Skokie), Margaret Croke (D – Chicago), Janet Yang-Rohr (D – Naperville), Nicholas Smith (D – Chicago), Sam Yingling (D – Grayslake), and Mike Kelly (D – Chicago).

In partnership with AIOI, the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago (JUF) has been investing much effort in coalition building and advocating for this funding. These efforts generated support for the initiative from a broad spectrum of organizations and communities.

"We have advocated for greatly needed security funding in prior years," said AIOI's director of government affairs, Rabbi Shlomo Soroka. "Recent events and the fiscal conditions certainly played a role, but the fact that we have passionate partners really makes all the difference."

AIOI thanks Governor Pritzker for his vision along with the supportive members of the Illinois General Assembly, and partnering organizations for their efforts to make this program a reality.

Brooklyn and Monsey Moms of Children with Special Needs Come Together with Yahalom
Rabbi Shlomo Farhi addressing the mothers at the Brooklyn event
Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, executive vice president of Agudath Israel, addressing the mothers at the Monsey event
Mothers of children with special needs carry a unique and extremely heavy burden. It is often that they feel alone and unsupported. In order to help these mothers, YahalomNY, a division of Agudah's Project LEARN, has been holding a series of mothers' nights out. These events are geared to provide well-deserved breaks through an evening of inspiration and relaxation.

This month Yahalom has hosted two events, one in Monsey and one in Brooklyn.

The night out in Brooklyn was hosted in the home of Gavriel and Vardi Jeidell, and was attended by a group of mothers who came from all over Brooklyn to join at this event. Rabbi Shlomo Farhi spoke to the mothers, delivering a message of chizuk and inspiration.

The Monsey event was hosted in the home of Chezky and Hadassah Klein, and organized, planned, and arranged by Esther Kopelowitz. Over 60 mothers from neighborhoods across Monsey attended, including, New Hempstead, Spring Valley, New Square, and Kiryas Joel. Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, executive vice president of Agudath Israel, spoke beautifully to the mothers - sharing Agudah's mission of helping the klal on the community level. He spoke of the excitement that the Agudah has in being able to initiate the Yahalom division of the Agudah and to help these families with their individual needs.

Both events were set up beautifully with hot food and desserts, and the mothers were also given Yahalom mugs and notebooks to take home with them.

"It is really beautiful and inspiring to see these mothers, from all different backgrounds come together," said Tova Wacholder, director of YahalomNY. "I received much positive feedback from the mothers and I am grateful that the Agudah can be helpful to them."
