BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA 5773 Parshas Chukas: Exchanging Hostages
In this week's parsha we read about the death of Aharon Hakohen and how the Canaanites came to fight the Jews. The Torah tells that the Canaanites captured a maidservant, and the Jews fought back and recaptured her.
What is the significance of knowing exactly who was captured, when anyways the Jews fought back and recaptured her? The Netziv explains that Hashem brought on this tragedy for the purpose of teaching the Jews how to deal with wars. Hashem was trying to teach us that the main ammunition in war is prayer and giving charity, as the Jews did. Since this was essentially an educational lesson, Hashem arranged that a "non-member" of the nation would be captured in order to minimize the trauma of the event.(AUDIO HERE)
