YWN KIA Gives Back To Chabad

The first time a rabbi stopped into the newly opened Freehold Kia, offering freshly baked challah and a chance to put on tefillin, no one was more surprised than dealership owner Jay Brichke. “I’ve been a Jew for 56 years, and no one has ever taken the time or effort to reach out to me like this,” said Brichke, a Livingston resident. “For the first time in my life I put on tefillin, and I found myself really embracing it.” Less than 10 months after it opened, Freehold Kia is now the largest Kia dealer in the Eastern region, with a second location opening soon in Toms River, Brichke said. But no matter how busy he is, Brichke always looks forward to Fridays, when Rabbi Levi Wolosow of Chabad of Western Monmouth County pops in to “laugh and learn” together. The relationship has made such an impact on Brichke that he recently launched “Kia Cash for Chabad”. The dealership will donate $100 to Chabad every time a new customer mentions Chabad or Friendship Circle, which helps families of special needs children. “Rabbi Levi and a busload of rabbinical students go up and down Route 9 on Fridays visiting Jewish business owners. They go out of their way to do something for others to make them better people,” said Brichke, a member of Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston. “It’s important to me to give thanks and give back.” Brichke is one of about 50 local business people who attend Chabad’s monthly Jewish Business Network, where they learn about topics of interest to business owners, while helping each other promote their businesses. “We believe that Judaism is everywhere – in your personal life and your business life,” said Wolosow, director of Chabad’s Rosenberg Center for Jewish Education. In their private study sessions in Brichke’s dealership office, topics run the gamut from Jewish mourning rituals, the tattooing prohibition, Jewish business ethics, and CEO compensation. “My goal is to make Jewish education accessible to anyone. If you don’t have the time to go learn, we come to your office,” Wolosow said. “You can pick any topic of interest on the Jewish spectrum. Information is empowering and doesn’t have to be boring.” Sometimes when work becomes overly stressful, Brichke picks up the phone for a quick reality check with the rabbi. “He always tells me that Hashem runs the show. SAY PARSHAS HAMAN TODAY

When our ancestors were in the Wilderness, a month after the Exodus from Egypt, they faced a tomorrow with no food. Justifiably, they asked Moshe if he had taken them into the desert to starve to death. Hashem responded that in the morning they would see that He had not forsaken them. In the morning – and every morning for the next 40 years – there was manna waiting for them. By evening there was nothing left, and the next morning, it was there again. Can you imagine how we would feel if we went to sleep every night with empty refrigerators? There in the Wilderness, Hashem showed our ancestors that ultimately, parnassah is in His hands. We pray for it every day – to provide for our families, to assist worthy causes, to build sturdy foundations for the future. This year, more than any in living memory, we pray for parnassah. The recession has hit everywhere. Relatives and neighbors, institutions and hopes for the future have been battered. So we pray for parnassah perhaps more fervently than in the past – but some days are more propitious than others. The Torah reading of this coming Shabbos -- Parashas Beshalach -- includes the chapter telling how the Jewish People in the Wilderness received manna. Many people recite the chapter daily, as a special prayer for parnassah. There is also a widespread custom to recite this chapter on the Tuesday of the week of Beshalach, which this year is January 31st. OU TARYAG Shemoneh Esrei #1: Avos (Fathers)

Shemoneh Esrei #1 - Avos (Fathers) by Rabbi Jack Abramowitz As we will see in Mitzvah #433, there is an obligation for us to try to get closer to God through prayer. To help us fulfill this, our Sages established a prayer to be recited thrice-daily, corresponding to the prayers of our Forefathers. This prayer is called the Amidah (because it is recited standing); the weekday version is also called Shemoneh Esrei, the Eighteen Benedictions (although a nineteenth has since been added). Once a week for nineteen weeks, we will review the contents of the 19 blessings of “Shemoneh Esrei.” The Shemoneh Esrei was first composed by the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah (Men of the Great Assembly), whose ranks included such august personalities as Ezra, Chagai, Zechariah, and Malachi. Some 400 years later, the order of the blessings – which had been recited orally since their initial composition – was standardized by Shimon HaPakuli in the presence of Rabban Gamliel; this represents the Shemoneh Esrei as we recite it today. (See Talmud Megilla 17b-18a.) The first three blessings serve as a sort of introduction, as we approach the King. These blessings address the nature of God and of our relationship with Him. The first bracha, Avos, recalls the Forefathers (Abraham, Isaac and Jacob), each of whom recognized God and forged his own unique relationship with Him.

BAIS HAVAAD ON THE PARSHA 5772 ~ PARSHAS BO ~Do-It-Yourself Justice

In this week's parsha we read about the last three makkos that Hashem sent upon the Egyptians. The Torah tells us that during the ninth makka, which was the plague of darkness, the Egyptians couldn't see at all for eight days straight. The Midrash Rabba says that during the days of darkness the Jews went searching through the homes and belongings of the Egyptians in order to know what kind of valuables they had, so they would know what to ask for when leaving Egypt. One can ask: How was it permitted for the Jews to enter the property of the Egyptians without permission? Isn't this a violation of stealing? The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh (3:18) explains as follows. In truth, the Egyptians owed them all of these valuables as pay for all the free labor that the Jews did for them (see Maseches Sanhedrin 91a). When one is owed money he has the right to take the law into his own hands and forcefully collect the money when no other option is available. This is known as the principle of "avid inish dina lnafshei", that one can take the law into his own hands. So, in truth, the Jews could have entered into the Egyptians' houses and confiscated their possessions during the days of darkness. However, Hashem wanted that they should only search the houses without taking. As such. the issue of stealing wasn't applicable in this situation.(PRINT AND AUDIO VERSION) Choshen Mishpat Chiddush:Exiting Your Blocked Driveway If someone has illegally parked in a manner that partially blocks your driveway, making it difficult to drive your own car out of the driveway, you may drive out in a normal fashion, taking reasonable care, and in the event that some damage, such as a scratch or dent, is caused to the obstructive car, you would not need to pay for this damage.

CHASSIDIC PEARLS BY RABBI LAZER BRODY PARSHAS BO

"Sanctify to Me each firstborn . . ." (Shemot 13:2). To this day, even after the destruction of our Holy Temple, we are required to sanctify not only our firstborn sons, but our firstborn cattle as well. The connection between the firstborn and his sanctification carries an underlying message that stresses the importance of a good beginning. Rebbe Nachman of Breslev writes, "The beginning is the main thing, for all beginnings are difficult… a person's functioning goes according to the power and enthusiasm that he invested at the beginning… therefore, a person must always make a new beginning, for the old beginning might not have been as good as it should have been, and everything goes according to the beginning" (Likutei Moharan I, 62:5). Some people, rationalizing and/or apologizing for a lack in their service to Hashem, walk around with a long face, depressed and discouraged. They say: "What do you want from me? Was I born the son or daughter of a Rebbe or a Rosh Yeshiva? I never had the chance to learn Torah or Halacha properly, and you can't teach an old dog new tricks." Any student of Breslov thought must vehemently disagree. Rebbe Nachman gives a bright ray of hope and encouragement to anyone that didn't enjoy an ideal beginning in life or in any particular endeavor when he says, "A person must always make a new beginning!" The outcome of this simple but monumental teaching is that there is no reason for despair – ever! At any given time, a person can draw the line and say that the past is no longer a concern – "From this moment on, I declare a new beginning!" Rebbe Nachman practiced exactly what he preached. Reb Natan writes (Shivchei HaRan, 6), that Rebbe Nachman was accustomed to constantly begin anew. "Whenever he fell from his particular level, he did not give up. He would simply say, 'I will begin to devote myself to Hashem and this is the very first time.' This happened time and again and each time he would start all over again. He would often begin anew many times in a single day. For even in the course of a day there were many times when he would fall away from his high level of devotion. But each time he would start again, no matter how many times it happened, even within a single day." The mitzvah of teshuva, returning to Hashem, is Hashem's written guarantee that a new beginning is not only effective, but it's even better than the old beginning. This law of spirituality also applies to the physical world; a welded piece of metal is stronger than the original piece of metal, a new growth of a tree is more vital than the old growth, and so forth.

Translated and abridged by Rabbi Chanan Morrison Parshat Bo "Moses told the people: Remember this day that you have left Egypt, the place of slavery." (Ex. 13:3) The word zachor ('Remember') is not in the imperative tense (z'chor!), but in the infinitive absolute form. This grammatical form indicates that the Torah is not merely commanding us to remember and commemorate the anniversary of the Exodus from Egypt. Rather, zachor implies a state of being. It describes us as a people who always remember this historic date. Why? Ben-Gurion and the Mayflower In 1936, the Peel Commission questioned David Ben-Gurion, then head of the Jewish Agency, concerning Jewish rights to the Land of Israel. Ben-Gurion gave the following reply: 'Three hundred years ago, a ship called the Mayflower set sail to the New World. In it were Englishmen unhappy with English society and government, who sought an uninhabited coast to settle and establish a new world. They landed in America, and were among the first pioneers and builders of that land.

A men's wool winter coat was brought in to be checked. The coat had no brand name or label. Linen was found in the collar and the front canvas rendering the coat Shatnez.  In addintion the padding under the lining was made out of reprocessed material- which makes it impossible to check 100% accurately.

A Yeshiva Bachur is in serious condition after being struck by a vehicle, Sunday night. The accident occurred about 9:20 PM at the intersection of Madison Avenue and 7th Street, TLS reports. The Bachur, approximately 15 years old, was reportedly crossing Madison Avenue when he was hit and thrown about 30 feet from the intersection. Lakewood Hatzolah Paramedics were expedited to the scene, and transported him to the Jersey Shore Medical Center with serious injuries. Parshat Va'era The blessings recited over most foods refer to God as the Borei, the Creator. Thus we say: "the Creator of fruits of the ground," "the Creator of fruits of the tree," "the Creator of fruits of the vine," and so on. Yet the blessing for bread — Hamotzi — does not fit this pattern. Before eating bread, we say "Who brings forth bread from the earth." Why do we not acknowledge God as the Creator of bread, as we do with other blessings? Actually, the wording of this blessing appears to quote God's announcement to Moses: "You will know that I am the Lord your God, Who brings you forth (Hamotzi) from under the Egyptian subjugation." (Ex. 6:7) Is there some connection between bread and the Exodus from Egypt?

And the frogs ascended upon the land of Egypt" (Shmot 8:1). Each of the ten plagues, like everything else Hashem does, conveys its own unique message and an intrinsic lesson in life; the frogs are no different. People usually don't attach significance to a frog. They usually consider it a small ugly creature, an object of disdain or repulsion. At best, folks are willing to tolerate the frogs as long as they limit their croaking to the faraway woods and wetlands. Jewish tradition looks at frogs in a totally different light. Rebbe Nachman of Breslov wrote an entire discourse elaborating on the inner meaning of the frog (see Likutei Moharan I:3). He says they allude to scholars of Torah, the princes of humanity with enlightened spiritual cognizance.

The 350 Mehadrin bus[1] from Bnei Brak to Ashdod is normally jammed, but at 3 PM more than half the seats were still vacant. Four young women in slacks, obviously not from the Haredi[2] or religious neighborhoods along the route, boarded the bus at the stop adjacent to the Coca Cola factory in Bnei Brak. Rather than moving to the rear of the bus, they sat down demonstratively in the front two rows seats on the right side of the bus. Some of the male passengers were baffled; two others decided to get off the bus. A Breslever Chassid, sitting across the young ladies on the left side of the bus, simply closed his eyes and smiled. This was not a reaction that the headline-seeking heroines were looking for, having so boldly entered the mobile Haredi lion’s den.

It is suspected that he may have cellulitis, or other infection. He was taken by an Ezra L’Marpe ambulance to the hospital, and is currently undergoing tests. FW: Tefillos Needed- Batya Emunah bat Bracha Chaya

Dear Family and Friends, I know we have been bad at updating lately, a lot has gone on since our last email and Batya is going in for her eighth surgery tomorrow. Here is a quick update... Tomorrow is the day! After her long stay in the pediatric ICU, Batya is going in for surgery tomorrow! (We don't know a time just yet). This surgery is crucial for us! As some of you know two shabbosim ago Batya had a bowel obstruction and had surgery to correct it, as a result she got a shunt infection the following Thursday and required removal of the shunt that Friday night. 10 days later, and 10 days clear of infection both neurosurgery and general surgery are ready to internalize the shunt. Because of the recent abdominal surgery the doctors want to be sure her belly is healed and ready for the shunt to be placed in her perinatal cavity. Gd willing we will have the best neurosurgeon and general surgeon taking care of Batya and with Hashems help the the power of tefillah we are hoping everything goes smoothly. As most of you know, we haven't had the best of luck with the shunt in the past (this being her seventh shunt surgery) we are hoping and praying that this surgery be a complete success and Batya should never have to see the OR again (unless she decides to become a surgeon of course) Please please daven, do a mitzvah and keep her in your thoughts throughout the day tomorrow. A short Insight into SHMUEL 1, Chapter 6 By Rabbi Nisson Dov Miller

After the Ark had been in the hands of the Philistines wreaking havoc for seven months, they turned to their priests and sorcerers for advice as how to properly send the Ark away to its place. The priests and sorcerers answered, “If [you] are sending [back] the Ark of the G-d of Israel, you must not send it empty handed, but you must certainly send back a guilt offering to Him. Then you will be healed and you will realize why His hand would not turn away from against you.” From the response of the priests and sorcerers it sounds like the only time they would know that their afflictions had come from Hashem was if they were healed upon the returning of the Ark. If they would not be healed, it seems that they would have concluded that the suffering was happenstance or from some other cause. As Jews, the Torah teaches that there is nothing that is happenstance. Every bit of pleasure or pain that we experience is part of an ongoing communication that Hashem has with us.

According to the Radak, the idol of Dagon contained two distinct parts. The top part was the image of a person. The bottom part was in the image of a fish. The source of its power, in the minds of those who worshiped it, was from the upper portion, from the head and the hands. For that reason , the Alshich tells us that verse four is relating something very specific. The verse says, “They woke up early the next morning and behold Dagon had fallen forward to the ground in front of the Ark of Hashem and the head of Dagon and the two palms of its hands were detached [lying] at the threshold. Only Dagon remained.” What does it mean that “only Dagon remained?

"I Shall Be As I Shall Be" (Shemot 3:14). Our sages teach us that Hashem is truth and His Holy Name is truth. The Torah alludes to the eternal truth of Hashem's Name when Hashem reveals Himself to Moshe (Moses) for the first time on Mount Sinai. Moshe asks Hashem His name, and Hashem answers, "I Shall Be As I Shall Be". "I Shall Be" in Hebrew is אהיה – aleph, hey, yud, hey. In numerical equivalents, aleph = 1, hey = 5, yud = 10, hey = 5. 1 + 5 +10 +5 = 21. If we use the word "As" as a multiplication sign, then Hashem's Holy Name as revealed to Moses becomes a mathematical equation of 21 x 21 = 441. The Hebrew letter aleph = 1, mem = 40, and taph = 400; aleph, mem, and taph are the letters of the Hebrew word emet, truth! Truth is Hashem's fountain pen. Therefore, whenever and wherever we find anything less than 100% true, we know that it's not Hashem's signature, for Hashem's fountain pen writes nothing but truth. An age-old expression of Breslever Chassidim, attributed to Rebbe Nachman's great grandfather the Baal Shem Tov of saintly and blessed memory, says that 99% truth is 100% lie.

A short Insight into SHMUEL 1, Chapter 3 By Rabbi Nisson Dov Miller

Rav Hai Gaon (Teshuvos Hagaonim) responded to a question that was asked of him about the distinction between true prophecy and sorcery. He responded, “That which you asked regarding the difference between actual prophecy and sorcery [is clear]...” Sorcery is only found in things that: A) happen as part of the natural world order or B) people can make them. However, a sign of a prophecy through which a prophet can prove himself as an agent of Hashem must have two ingredients. If one of them is missing he will not be called a proven prophet. The first ingredient that is required in a sign from someone who claims prophecy is that the feat that he claims will legitimize him as a prophet is a feat that goes against the world order. The sign can not be simply that it will rain at 2 pm on January 31, 2010 in Yeruhalayim. Similarly, the claim can not be that there will be a record crop of oranges this harvest. If it is something that is part of the “minhag ha'olam” - the way the world works, even if it is a rare occurrence, there is no proof that the person is an authentic navi.

As the Navi refocuses on Shmuel, we are told about a special garment that Chana made for her son. Verse nineteen reads, “His mother would make him a small robe (of distinction) and bring it to him from time to time.” Rashi and the Radak (second explanation) understand the word “ta'aseh” - “she would make” – as relating to Chana making a new robe every year appropriate to Shmuel's size as he grew. The Radak (first explanation) tells us that a m'il was a type of robe used only by those who were of stature. A m'il was not normally worn by a minor like Shmuel. Therefore, she would bring it to wear only on special occasions.

Yes, that’s right, the Chevra. In an exclusive JMR scoop, Eli Gerstner took a few minutes out of his busier than busy schedule to share a sneak peek about the new (and not so new) members of this always hot group. Consisting of Chaim Frand, Ely Shalom, Azriel Zylberberg and Nati Chaboura, the new Chevra consists of one Chevra alumnus (Frand), two YBC alums (Shalom and Zylberberg) and a very dedicated Torontonian who switched to a Far Rockaway yeshiva (Shor Yoshuv) in order to be part of this very exciting opportunity (Chaboura). With the exception of Frand, all are in their teens. “I have always tried to keep the Chevra young, fresh and innovative,” said Eli. “Our original guys were a little older and two years down the road they all got married. We are going a little younger this time in the hopes that this new Chevra will be here for the long haul.” Not much information has been released about the new Chevra for the simple reason that they went straight from finalizing the group to rehearsals and recording every day. Not only are there three more Chevra shows lined up in the immediate future, but they are hard at work on their next album which they are hoping to release Purim time, but Eli cautions that as with any album, it will be released only when it is ready. Also in the cards for EG Productions? With so much talent in house (think former Chevra and Menucha members) there is talk of another, more mature group on the horizon as well.
