Summary by Channie Koplowitz Stein Parshat Chayei Sarah includes the first recording of a shidduch transaction. Avraham Avinu sends his servant Eliezer back “home” to find an appropriate match for his son Yitzchak. The first girl he meets seems to meet the test Eliezer has set. At his request, she gives him water to drink from her pitcher and then immediately offers to water his ten camels, no simple task. Eliezer senses his prayer has been fulfilled, and he presents Rivkah, this young lady, with a nose ring weighing a beka, and two arm bracelets weighing ten gold shekels. Only then does he ask Rivkah for her family background and if there is room in their home for him to spend the night.
