Subject: [chicago-aneinu] Hodu L'Hashem - Please say Tehillim for injured pilot
From an Aneinu member:

"Moadim l’simcha.

What could have been a horrific tragedy unfolded today, 9/30/26, in the skies over the Jordan and Suadia Arabia aboard FlyDubai Flight FZ1073. The thought of more than 160 Jewish lives hanging in the balance—and the unimaginable loss to future generations—is sobering.

Our community never misses an opportunity to express gratitude to Hashem, while also rushing to daven for those who were injured.

The miracle of tragedy being averted began with the incredible actions of India national Captain Smit Machchhar. While injured, bleeding, and under attack, as the plane plummeted more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds, Captain  Machchhar managed three critical actions: using his foot to unlatch the cockpit door from inside, enabling passengers enter and take heroic action; sending a special distress code alerting nearby airports and aircraft to the emergency; and attempting to stabilize the plane’s horrific descent.

Captain Machchhar’s heroic actions literally save so many Jewish lives. Surely, it is appropriate for our community to say Tehillim for Captain Smit Machchhar, who is hospitalized."

I have included the usual Tehillim for the sick as well as Mizmor L'soda to thank and praise Hashem for today's miraculous salvation of all of those on the plane.

(1) A psalm for praise. Raise a shout for the LORD, all the earth;
(2) worship the LORD in gladness; come into His presence with shouts of joy.
(3) Acknowledge that the LORD is God; He made us and we are His, His people, the flock He tends.
(4) Enter His gates with praise, His courts with acclamation. Praise Him! Bless His name! (5) For the LORD is good; His steadfast love is eternal; His faithfulness is for all generations.

1) For the musician, with musical accompaniment on the sheminis instrument, a mizmor by David. (2) Hashem, don’t rebuke me in Your anger. Don’t chastise me in Your rage. (3) Grant me Your mercy, Hashem, for I have been cut down. (4) Heal me, Hashem, for my bones shake with terror. My soul is utterly terrified, and You Hashem — How long? (5) Turn back, Hashem, release my soul. Save me as befits Your kindness ... (6) for there is no mention of You in death. In the grave who will thank You? (7) I am exhausted from groaning; every night my bed is drenched; with my tears I soil the place where I have lain.  (8) My eye is dimmed from anger, aged by all my tormentors. (9) Depart from me all wrongdoers, for Hashem has heard the sound of my weeping. (10) Hashem has heard my plea; Hashem will accept my prayer. (11) They will be ashamed and will be utterly astounded. When all my enemies return, they will be ashamed for a while.

(1) For the musician, a mizmor by David. (2) May Hashem answer you on the day of distress. May the Name of Yaakov’s G-d protect you. (3) May He send your help from the Mikdash; may He support you from Tzion. (4) May He give consideration to all your minchah-offerings. May He accept your olah-offerings, Selah. (5) May He grant you according to your heart. May He fulfill your every plan. (6) We will sing joyously because of your deliverance, and we will gather around banners in the Name of our G-d. May Hashem fulfill all your requests.  (7) Now I know that Hashem continues to save His anointed one. He will continue to answer from His holy heaven, with the mighty victories of His right hand. (8) Some [depend] on chariots, and some on horses. We call out the Name of Hashem, our G-d. (9) They slumped and fell, but we stood up and were empowered. (10) Hashem save! May the King answer us on the day we call.

1A song for ascents. I shall raise my eyes to the mountains, from where will my help come?
2My help is from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
3He will not allow your foot to falter; Your Guardian will not slumber.
4Behold the Guardian of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5The Lord is your Guardian; the Lord is your shadow; [He is] by your right hand.
6By day, the sun will not smite you, nor will the moon at night.
7The Lord will guard you from all evil; He will guard your soul.
8The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in from now and to eternity.

Psalms Chapter 130 תְּהִלִּים

חוְהוּא יִפְדֶּ֣ה אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מִ֜כֹּ֗ל עֲוֹֽנוֹתָֽיו:

1A song of ascents. From the depths I have called You, O Lord.
2O Lord, hearken to my voice; may Your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
3O God, if You keep [a record of] iniquities, O Lord, who will stand?
4For forgiveness is with You, in order that You be feared.
5I hoped, O Lord; yea, my soul hoped, and I wait for His word.
6My soul is to the Lord among those who await the morning, those who await the morning.
7Israel, hope to the Lord, for kindness is with the Lord and much redemption is with Him.
8And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities

Psalms Chapter 142 תְּהִלִּים

1A maskil of David, when he was in the cave, a prayer.
2[With] my voice, I cry out to the Lord; [with] my voice, I supplicate the Lord.
3I pour out before Him my speech; my distress I recite before Him.
4When my spirit enwraps itself upon me, and You know my path. In whichever way I go, they have hidden a snare for me.
5Looking to the right, I see that no one recognizes me; escape is lost from me; no one seeks my soul.
6I cried out to You, O Lord; I said, "You are my refuge, my lot in the land of the living."
7Hearken to my cry for I have become very low; save me from my pursuers for they have overpowered me.
8Take my soul out of confinement to give thanks to Your name; because of me the righteous will crown You, because You will recompense me.

Dear Alumni and Friends,

We hope you and your families had a meaningful Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur and are enjoying your Sukkos break.

It’s been a busy start to the year at HTC. In the lead-up to the Yamim Noraim, the Sarah Hartman Women’s College of Touro hosted special programming for women in the community, where we were privileged to have a packed house! We also marked an exciting step forward for Sarah Hartman Women's College as demolition began on the next phase of the College’s campus.

We'd like to invite our alumni and community to join us tonight in the Shabat Sukkah for a special Simchas Beis Hashoeva with Moshe Tischler (details below)! Additionally, please join us on Simchas Torah night for hakafos!

Wishing you and your families a wonderful remainder of Sukkos and a Chag Sameach!

All the best,

Rabbi Shmuel L. Schuman

CEO, HTC

Sarah Hartman Women's College Holds Wrecking Ball Kickoff

During the Aseres Yemei Teshuva, sometimes it can feel as though the walls are caving in. At the “Wrecking Ball Kickoff” event held last Wednesday by Sarah Hartman Women's College of Touro at HTC, that feeling was quite literal — and a promising sign of what lies ahead.

The event marked the formal kickoff to the demolition of HTC's property at 2620 W. Touhy Ave. (formerly the Veitzener Cheder), which will serve as the anchor of the college's new campus. Nearly 75 people braved the rain to attend the event that quite literally took place in a construction zone: protective netting and fallen limestone to the west, holes in the plaza where the playground stood a week ago, construction vehicles on site, and caution tape everywhere.

HTC's Beis Midrash is thrilled to have begun the new zman learning Chezkas HaBatim with a tremendous energy and strong kol Torah. This month, our Rosh HaYeshiva, Rabbi Moshe Revah delivered his first Shiur Klali of the year, bringing together the Beis Midrash, Kollel, and FYHS upperclassmen into a packed Beis Midrash for a powerful shared learning experience. We wish our talmidim much bracha for a wonderful year ahead filled with growth in Torah and avodas Hashem!

Sarah Hartman Women’s College Hosts Community Evening of Inspiration Before the Yamim Noraim

On September 8, Sarah Hartman Women’s College of Touro welcomed women and girls from across the community for a beautiful and meaningful evening in the Hartman Library. The program began with Hataras Nedarim, followed by an inspiring shiur on Yemei Teshuvah led by Rabbi Moshe Revah, Rosh HaYeshiva of HTC, with additional reflections from Mrs. Kochava Yitzhak, Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this uplifting evening in preparation for the Yamim Noraim.

Alumni Spotlights

HTC is proud of our students, past and present! Take a look at this month's spotlighted alumni.

Yoni Kohn, FYHS 1998

Current Location: Yad Binyamin

Profession: I'm on the English team of Tzurba M'Rabanan, a series of halacha books used in schools and shuls around the world. I also recently completed my Doctorate on the Rashbatz (1361-1444).

Tell us a little bit about your family:

Married with 7 kids

What is your favorite memory/(memories) from FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:

So many great memories and moments. I remember the competition around a “Jeopardy”-themed review in Rabbi Polstein’s shiur, when Aaron Slotnick came up with a big answer for our team.

Once, Rabbi Twerski walked into shiur a bit late. Nobody was learning. He wrote on the chalkboard, “מותר ללמוד תורה בבוקר” (One is allowed to learn Torah in the morning)! His little grin made us crack up!

I also really benefited from Mr. Schaffel’s guidance and optimism. He had a willingness to talk and guide us.

Please share a lesson/takeaway from your time at FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:

I learned to be a Ben Torah at the Yeshiva. The musar schmoozes on Tuesday left me with life lessons. For example, things like picking up the garbage from the ground and just being sympathetic and kind to people when they are down. They taught us that a Ben Torah is being a good ethical person and then building your ruchniyus on top of that.

Advice for current students:

Don't be afraid to do the right thing.

Anything else to share:

I felt that Rabbi Kamenetzky had a profound impact on me, because he treated us as young adults and not just little kids.

Ezra Genauer, FYHS 1992

Current Location: Atlanta (originally from Seattle)

Profession: Manage a portfolio of shopping centers in Washington state

Tell us a little bit about your family:

Married with 5 kids

What is your favorite memory/(memories) from FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:

I always enjoyed the softball league. I always looked forward to it. I also got to be the yearbook editor my senior year. The Purim shpiel and shtick were really fun. We had a small class, and this was before the school got big. We had a great camaraderie. The dorm life was really fun!

Please share a lesson/takeaway from your time at FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:

They taught us how to grow up and adapt. Nobody is going to fix all your problems. We learned how to change in a healthy setting. The staff really knew us. Rabbi Isenberg, who was in his first year, pushed me to learn in OJ. It was a life changing experience where I still have relationships to this day. I owe him a lot for recognizing that in me. When I visited 8 years ago, he came to see me.

Advice for current students:

Figure out who you are so you can make the right choices for yourself. Follow the advice of people who know you. Be self aware and self confident.

Anything else to share:

The Yeshiva is very unique, and it would be impossible to even start it today as it balances the Yeshiva and academics. Things are more polarizing now. It's the only yeshiva like it in the world, very impressive. It's a jewel in the country.

Living in Hashem's Embrace

By Rabbi Moshe Revah

The Gemara in Sukkah details seemingly in an incidental manner a long list of possible ‘decorations’ that one may place in the Sukkah. “If one…decorated his Sukkah with colorful curtains and sheets, and hung in it ornamental nuts, almonds, peaches, and pomegranates, grape branches, and wreaths of stalks of grain, wines, oils, and vessels full of flour, etc.” Why does the Tanna need such a long list, or any list for that matter, delineating how one can decorate his Sukkah? Merely writing ‘it was decorated’ should suffice!

The Gift of Shabbos

By Rabbi Aaron Leibtag

A few hours after Creation, Adam and Chava are banished from Gan Eden, and later in the parashah, we see Kayin punished for eternity for the murder of his brother Hevel. Midrash Rabbah (22) presents a fascinating dialogue between the two, each having faced significant suffering. When Adam inquires about Kayin’s judgment, Kayin responds that he has engaged in teshuvah. Adam is taken aback by this revelation, exclaiming: "Such is the power of teshuvah, and I didn’t know it!"
