Smoking on Yom tov

The earlier poskim extensively discussed the issue of smoking cigarettes or other tobacco products on Yom Tov. The discussion revolved around the question of whether smoking was widespread enough to be considered a davar hashaveh l'chol nefesh. Some poskim permitted smoking, since smoking was thought to be healthy at that time. The lenient opinions agreed that while smoking is permitted (as mavir—making a fire), extinguishing a cigarette is forbidden. Many contemporary poskim rule that since the dangers of smoking are presently well-known, all opinions would agree that it is not a davar hashaveh l'chol nefesh. It is important to note that due to the dangers involved, many poskim today forbid smoking altogether.

Putting down a match on Yom Tov

A person must be careful not to throw down a lit match on Yom Tov after he is finished using the fire. This would cause the fire to become extinguished, violating the melachah of mechabeh (extinguishing). Instead, a match should be gently placed down so that the fire goes out by itself. If the fire could burn a person's fingers, he may throw it down. Although the fire will certainly become extinguished as a result, it is a psik reisha d'lo nichah leih--an unwanted inevitable secondary effect. To prevent the pain of burning one's fingers, such a psik reisha is permitted.

Spraying clothing on Yom Tov

On Yom Tov, it is forbidden to place or spray any spices or fragrance onto a garment in order to scent it. One may spray deodorant onto the body, even though it may inevitably become absorbed in the clothing that he is wearing, as long as spraying the clothing is not his intent. Similarly, one may gargle with mouthwash, since there is no prohibition against scenting the body. The poskim discuss whether water may be flavored with a mouthwash concentrate. Some forbid doing so, since the concentrate is adding a smell to the water

  • Shulchon Aruch permits bathing outside of a proper bathhouse if the water was heated before Yom Tov. The poskim say that water heated by a boiler with a timer that activates it on Yom Tov is considered to be heated on Yom Tov and may not be used for bathing. Ashkenaz custom is not to bathe at all, even with water that was heated on Erev Yom Tov.

  • The prohibition against bathing on Yom Tov only applies to bathing in hot water. Bathing in lukewarm water is permitted.

  • Utensils that are impure may not be toiveled on Shabbos or Yom Tov. Elevating them from their impure status is the equivalent to fixing them, which is forbidden. However, a person may toivel to purify himself, since it does not appear as if he is "fixing" himself but merely cooling himself in the water.
