Dear Alumni and Friends,

It's been a busy month back in our divisions following the Yomim Tovim.

This month, our Rosh HaYeshiva kicked off the new zman with a shiur klali and Mrs. Kochava Yitzhak, Chair of Judaic Studies in SHWCT, returned with an all new Sunday chaburah series.

In our high school division, our recent alumni learning in Yeshivos in Israel were visited by Rabbi Leibtag, who got to see their progress and growth firsthand!

Looking ahead, we invite all 7th and 8th grade boys and their parents to join us for our upcoming FYHS open house, this Tuesday evening, November 3rd. Please spread the word and register here!

All the best,

Rabbi Shmuel L. Schuman

CEO, HTC

Rabbi Leibtag Visits FYHS Alumni in Yeshiva in Israel

In early October, FYHS Menahel Rabbi Aaron Leibtag had the privilege of visiting our recent alumni learning in Yeshiva in Israel. We're so proud of their accomplishments and wish them continued hatzlacha in their learning!

HTC Alumni Basketball League (ABL) Opening Night

HTC’s Alumni Basketball League (ABL) is back for another action packed season. Games held at the Weber Center in Skokie welcome 92 players on 13 teams every Sunday evening throughout the winter months. Best of luck for a great season ahead!

FYHS Simchas Beis Hashoeva Brings Community Together

FYHS alumni and community members gathered for a spirited Simchas Beis Hashoeva and Kumzitz featuring Moshe Tischler. Hosted by the Halpert and Shabat families at the home of Ari and Shana Shabat, the evening was dedicated in memory of Mr. Abraham Safirstein a"h, bringing together generations of the Yeshiva family for an uplifting evening of music and achdus.

FYHS Alumni Reconnect in Israel

The FYHS alumni connection remains strong across the globe! Over Sukkos, members of the Class of 1969 reunited at the home of Daniel Kutoff in Yerushalayim, while members of the Class of 2008 gathered at the home of Netanel Goldstein in Ramat Beit Shemesh.

FYHS Begins Not Numbers Survivors

Our Yeshiva is excited to once again participate in the Names, Not Numbers Holocaust program. We are currently in the planning stages and looking for survivors to be interviewed to share their stories for this incredibly meaningful and impactful program.  If you have a relative or close friend who is available to be interviewed, whether they live in the Chicago area or elsewhere, please share their name and contact information with Rabbi Josh Zisook at jzisook@touro.edu or (224) 406-8902. All suggestions will be considered.

Alumni Spotlights

HTC is proud of our students, past and present! Take a look at this month's spotlighted alumni.

Mordy Rosby, FYHS 1998

Current Location: Bet Shemesh

Profession: Volunteering in a hospital where I'm a patient. I have been fighting a debilitating illness for many years, so I try to help, encourage, and advocate for the rights of others fighting as well.

Tell us a little bit about your family:

Married with 3 boys

What is your favorite memory/(memories) from FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:

We were the first class with Rabbi Cardash. He was my 9th grade rebbe. It was a fun year. He actually just came to visit me recently!

Rabbi Isenberg was also very kind to me and helped me through high school to have a great experience. Rabbi Weiss was also great. He told everyone that I was the best note taker in class. Rabbi Polstein was great and we had a great time on our class trip to Kentucky with him. I looked up to him and he cared a lot about his students.

Great chevra as well! I have so many fond memories. The purim shpiels were great. The list goes on.

Please share a lesson/takeaway from your time at FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:

As much as we want to just go through high school, I look back on it so fondly. The relationships with rebbeim. You will see later in life that many lessons you learned in high school carry you.

Advice for current students:

Don't be afraid to take the next step and ask questions. Speak up if something on your mind bothers you. The Rebbeim are there to help.

Dovid Freund, FYHS 2003

Current Location: Toms River, NJ

Profession: Director of Analytics for a Pharmaceutical company

Tell us a little bit about your family:

Married with 4 boys and 1 girl

What is your favorite memory/(memories) from FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:

I was lucky enough to be in the dorm. Joking around in the dorms, Friday night onegs. My class built a strong bond, and we have daily Whatsapps going around. Such great camaraderie. The warmth of the rebbeim also was so special. They weren't scary and were approachable. You could talk to them about anything. We also had great secular teachers, like Mr. Hayes!

Please share a lesson/takeaway from your time at FYHS/HTC/Kayitz:

How important friendships and relationships are. We have such a special class. It also grounded me for the real world to be who you are and relate to all types of people.

Advice for current students:

Take in the time and enjoy it. Don't be overwhelmed by the pressure of the tests. Take the relationships with you. High school is a special time.

Anything else to share:

If you are a dormer, take your time. It takes time to adjust but you will be happy!

Elevating the Sparks Trapped in Exile

By Rabbi Meir Elkabas

As outlined in the writings of the holy Ariza"l, the goal and purpose of Creation is to elevate holy “sparks” trapped therein. These sparks – initially vessels of holiness used for the Creation – were shattered and scattered throughout the Creation, a built-in flaw, so that mankind can have a purpose and directive in his existence. Man’s mission is to collect these sparks and elevate them to their proper place – i.e. back to Hashem. With this, Hashem’s glory shines ever brighter, bringing His kindness and love for mankind more openly available and accessible.

Hashem's Power and Hashem's Control

By Rabbi Ben Zion Shenker

The Talmud (Pesachim 52b) relates that Chanania, Mishael, and Azaria opted to turn themselves over to be burned at the stake al kiddush Hashem, based on a kal vachomer argument. In the plague of the frogs, the frogs, who do not have the mitzvah of kiddush Hashem, jumped into hot ovens. (The Gemara assumes the ovens were hot based on the juxtaposition of the word "oven" to the word "kneeding bowls".) Thus, we, who have the mitzvah of kiddush Hashem, should certainly do so as well.
