There's a powerful story about Rav Meir Simcha of Dvinsk, the Ohr Sameach.
He was once learning with a chavrusa, and they got stuck on a Tosfos. No matter how many times they reviewed it, they couldn't make sense of the words. Finally, Rav Meir Simcha said:
} "We need to stop and daven. Let's ask Hashem to help us understand."
He stood and poured out his heart in tefillah:
} "Ribono Shel Olam, please have mercy on me… and help me be zocheh to ahavas haTorah."
His chavrusa was puzzled:
} "Now's the time to ask for ahavas haTorah? Shouldn't we be davening for binah — to understand the Tosfos?"
Rav Meir Simcha replied with a mashal:
A child is crying in the street. People try to calm him, but nothing works. Then the child's mother arrives. She whispers a few words — and the child stops crying. Why? Because she's the mother. Her love gives her the sensitivity to understand what the child needs, even without explanations.
} "If we want to truly understand Torah," Rav Meir Simcha said, "we need to love it. Ahavas haTorah isn't a luxury — it's a condition
for clarity."
