Marking the 93rd Yahrtzeit of Rav Meir Shapiro Zt"l
Rav Meir Shapiro zt’l had what we might call today an amazing resume. He was Rav in Lublin, one of the largest Jewish communities of its time. He founded Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, an elite yeshiva whose students were universally acknowledged as great talmidei chachamim. He served as a member of the Polish Parliament, the Sejm, where he defended Jewish interests in the seat of governmental power. Even were Rav Meir Shapiro to have only these accomplishments to his eternal credit, dayeinu, that alone would have been enough of a basis for us to revere his memory. But there was more. When the Lubliner Rav took the podium at the first Knessia Gedola organized by the fledgling Agudas Yisroel movement, and proposed that Jews from all backgrounds unite around the study of daily Daf Gemara, he galvanized the large audience of Agudah delegates to commit to an unprecedented program of limud haTorah – and from there it spread. Rav Meir Shapiro will always be remembered as the father of Daf Yomi. As we mark his 93rd yahrzeit on Sunday, 7 Cheshvan, Agudas Yisroel is proud to present a host of materials from our archives that give us a picture of this great man and his eternal legacy. |
