In the final hours of his life, Rav Meir Shapiro was struggling to breathe and could barely speak.

When his Rebbetzin began to cry, he took a piece of paper and wrote, “Now the true simcha begins.”

He asked those gathered around him to drink a l’chaim and then shook hands with each of his talmidim, holding their hands for a long time.

His final request was for them to dance and sing בך בטחו אבותינו, a niggun he had composed himself.

As they danced, some of the talmidim cried.

Rav Meir Shapiro looked at them and spoke what would be his final words.

“N'or b’Simcha.” Only with joy.

Moments later, he passed away.

This Sunday marks the 93rd yahrtzeit of Rav Meir Shapiro zt”l, the tzaddik who brought Daf Yomi to Klal Yisrael.

Ninety-three years later, Jews around the world continue to learn the same daf every day, carrying on the remarkable legacy he left behind.
