"He instructed that a public proclamation be made:

Whoever follows my guidance and draws close to me should be with me on Rosh Hashanah. No one should be missing.

Whoever merits to be with me on Rosh Hashanah has every reason to rejoice exceedingly.

'Eat rich foods and drink sweet beverages, for the joy of HaShem is your strength' (Nehemiah 8:10).

This verse was said regarding Rosh Hashanah."

“See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse - the blessing, if you heed…” (Deuteronomy 11:26–27)

Rashi explains the words “the blessing” to mean: “on condition that you listen.”

The Torah's wording is remarkable. It warns the Jewish people that both blessing and its opposite are placed before us, and that we are entrusted with the responsibility of choosing the path of blessing.

In Likutey Moharan, Rebbe Nachman teaches that whatever a person experiences in life should be viewed as containing hints and messages from Heaven. Everything that happens in this world carries an opportunity to draw closer to HaShem and to deepen our service of Him.

At the same time, however, Rebbe Nachman cautions us not to become consumed with endlessly searching for hidden messages in worldly matters. That approach can become spiritually dangerous and lead a person astray. The highest form of serving HaShem is through Torah study and heartfelt prayer.

These two ideas—paying attention to Heaven's messages while remaining focused on higher spiritual pursuits—must go hand in hand. If a person ignores the lessons concealed within his everyday life—his home, livelihood, and material affairs—then even his Torah study and prayers will lack an essential dimension of serving HaShem.

A person may indeed learn Torah and pray with great devotion, even becoming completely immersed in them. But for that service to be truly for the sake of HaShem, rather than merely for personal satisfaction or spiritual enjoyment, he must also recognize the Divine messages embedded within the ordinary events of daily life.

This is the meaning of the Torah's warning: “See, I set before you today a blessing and a curse.” Be attentive to the Heavenly hints placed before you, and also recognize that there are higher forms of Divine service. Yet both must share the same goal: a sincere desire to serve HaShem simply and wholeheartedly.

May it be HaShem's will that all of our efforts in this world be truly for His honor, and that we faithfully fulfill the mission He has entrusted to each of us.

Shabbat Shalom
