Week 1 Focus:

חיוב השבה והצלה

  • HASHAVAS AVEIDAH IN THE TORAH
  • THE ROLE OF YEUSH
  • HASHAVAS AVEIDAH FOR PROPERTY OR FINANCIAL LOSS
  • HASHAVAS AVEIDAH FOR PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL HARM

Introduction

The mitzvah of returning a lost object is just one of the obligations the Torah places upon us to protect others from loss. When given the opportunity, a Jew must take action to protect other people from loss or damage to their property, their physical health and security, and even their spiritual well-being.

Points to Ponder

• How many mitzvos and aveiros are there when a person comes across a lost object? When do

they apply?

• If a person ignored a lost object and it got ruined, is he liable to pay for the loss?

• In which case does a finder carry a greater liability: if he ignored the object altogether, or if he picked it up but subsequently did not care for it properly?
