THE TEFILLIN SCROLL   Catching errors: When writing a tefillin scroll, even the best sofrim can sometimes (but hopefully only very rarely!) make mistakes. Deterioration: Even the most perfectly-written tefillin scroll can become ruined and invalidated with the passage of time, especially if it is placed in an environment of extreme temperatures and/or excessive moisture (humidity). Maintenance and prevention: In addition to confirming that a tefillin scroll is (still) kosher or discovering that it has become ruined, a periodic check-up from CMC's expert sofer also includes critical maintenance, which can significantly extend the life of a kosher scroll. For example, by proactively touching up the ink of those letters or crowns that are just beginning to crack or fade, the sofer can prevent much worse (and potentially unfixable) problems from developing in the future.  B.
