Week 1 Focus:

קניני קטן וזכיות האב

  • INTRODUCTION
  • OWNING AND ACQUIRING MOVABLE OBJECTS
  • THE RIGHTS OF A PARENT
  • PARENTS AND BAR MITZVAH GIFTS

Introduction

The Torah grants a father certain monetary rights over his young daughters, and Chazal expanded those rights to include sons, and even adult children in certain cases. One reason for this was to avoid enmity within a home: if the father is supporting the family, he may take offense if the child were to keep things for themselves

Points to Ponder

• Does the Torah recognize ownership and property rights for children?

• Do parents have rights to their child's income?

• If an adult child receives a windfall while still being supported by their parents, e.g., they win the lottery, can the child keep it for themselves?

• If someone takes in and supports an orphan, do they gain the rights that parents usually have?
