Week 1 Focus:

חיוב הרחקה מעכו"ם

  • THE DEFINITION OF AVODAH ZARA
  • ENTERING A PLACE OF AVODAH ZARA
  • ENTERING THE GROUNDS OUTSIDE THE SANCTUARY
  • DISTANCING ONESELF FROM A HOUSE OF AVODAH ZARA
  • PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

Introduction

Our sojourn in exile has not afforded us the luxury of keeping our desired distance from idolatry. Therefore, we must define the level of distance that is required by halacha, all the while keeping in mind that it is only under duress that we have anything to do with idolaters.

Points to Ponder

• Is a Jew permitted to take a shortcut by passing through the premises of a church?

• Can a Jew take pleasure in hearing Christian music or viewing religious art?

• May one enter a church to take part in a non-religious ceremony?

• If a voting place is located within a church building, can a Jew enter it to vote?
