This Shabbos, we read two Torah portions: the regular weekly reading, Vayakhel, and an additional special reading, Parah. Together, these readings illuminate the essence of our relationship with G‑d and the foundational role of faith in fulfilling His commandments. Vayakhel recounts the collective effort of the Jewish people to construct the Mishkan, a sanctuary for the Divine Presence. Every detail of the Tabernacle's construction was precise, defined by G‑d's instructions. Yet, its true significance transcended logic. After all, how can mere physical materials serve as a dwelling place for the infinite G‑d? This paradox highlights a profound truth: our service to G‑d is not rooted solely in human intellect or understanding. It is anchored in a higher commitment—an unwavering faith in His will. Similarly, Parah presents the laws of the red heifer, a quintessential chok—a mitzvah that defies rational explanation. The ashes of the red heifer possess the power to purify those who have become impure, yet those involved in its preparation become impure themselves. This contradiction emphasizes the essence of Torah observance: faith that transcends comprehension. We fulfill G‑d's commandments not merely because we understand them, but because they connect us to His infinite wisdom. In a world that prizes logic and reason, embracing faith can be challenging. Yet, it is precisely this humility of faith that forges a bond with G‑d beyond the limitations of our understanding. It is what allows us to draw His presence ever closer, transforming the physical into a vessel for the Divine. May we strengthen our faith, embracing Torah and mitzvos with joy and trust. And may we recognize that even when we do not fully comprehend, each act of devotion draws us nearer to G‑d and reveals His presence within our lives. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Yitzchok Wolf |
